Rampant capitalism tells the world policy-makers to ignore climate change and science because they can make more money that way.
The problem is that they really either don't think about or don't care that money will be worthless if they ruin the country/planet.
They got theirs. Fuck everyone else.
These people are sick. Many of them deep down know that they're sick. They couldn't stop if they wanted to. It's like cancer. The only thing they care about is growth - until it all colapses under its own dead weight. They're aware that it will happen and some may even be looking forward to it. It's safe to say that none of them are happy.
