after a bit of googling my understanding is that there are inkjet printers to up to about 4-5 meters and then you have to stitch multiple pieces together. another way is computer controlled airbrush machines that can print up to about 15 meters and then you can use some other device to scroll the banner.

In a way one could argue genetic engineering is one of the oldest sciences ever. And it started with dogs, or maybe agriculture, depends on what one's definition of science is.
