I hate the word for the reasons you've said, but I know a lot of black Americans in Portugal that refer to themselves as expats.

Feels to me that the line is drawn along economic privilege lines rather than simply race.

I have friends without kids tell me how they would parent and what they don't think is "good parenting" all the time. They have no clue...

How wide can you spread your toes? I just checked and my fingers (without thumb) is ~18cm.

It's a serious commitment but, if it is going to be your home as opposed to an investment, then it makes sense to do it typically. Obviously I don't know your situation but it's my view that paying towards your own home makes better financial sense than renting in the long term.
