I work with several people who would think this is a good idea.
When they push it to prod, and our WAF goes 403 on every request, then suddenly it's my problem to "fix".

That's not wrong, but in this case, PlatformIO isn't showing these ads, bit [dot] ly is. AFAIK, only bitly gets the ad money.
Now, that's not fair. Come on!
They also protest-non-voted for:
- Gestapo in every city
- A federal war on transgendered individuals
- Tariffs on everything and prices skyrocketing
- Corruption the likes of which we've never seen
- Firing a sizeable portion of the federal workforce
- Cutting healthcare for those most at-risk
- Gutting education and science
- Rolling back environmental regulations and speed-running climate change
- and more!

Let me state it as a parable: If the building was on fire and someone was blocking the fire exit, but I managed to escape by shattering a 2nd floor window, yes, I would be mad at the person blocking the exit.
And more so: This was, very much, a clear and present danger. As we are all experiencing now. None of what is happening now is a surprise. Yet those people still refused to help or lift a finger to prevent it.

There was a clear and present danger that everyone with two brain cells to rub together was trying to prevent, and these people were actively standing in the way.
There's options, yes. Ubuntu Touch is getting better.
AFAIK, the main bottleneck (aside from hardware support) is a working open source IMS stack. IMS is the IP Multimedia Subsystem that is responsible for things like VoLTE/VoWIFI, SMS/MMS, etc. The last time I looked at Ubuntu Touch, it only supported baseband (not sure if that's the right term?) calls and SMS/MMS. Basically those only work in "3G" mode and won't work if your carrier requires VoLTE.
Lack of an open source IMS is also problematic for some other Android distros as well (and why flashing a newer GSI ROM to an older handset won't necessarily give you VoLTE).
And don't even get me started on the complete fustercluck that is RCS ðŸ˜
