Robert Sternberg saw three main elements in hatred:
- a negation of intimacy, by creating distance when closeness had become threatening;
- an infusion of passion, such as fear or anger;
- a decision to devalue a previously valued object.
The front-facing fist 👊: Threatening, intense, replicable (most people have hands)
The down-facing knife 🔪: sharp, cold, calculated
There are also very specific symbols of hatred, like the swastika and the Nazi salute, white-hooded robes and burning crosses, the flag of the Daesh, the Z of the RAF for the West et al., but all of those are tied to certain ideologies and cultures and might not make any sense outside of relevant situations.
I don't how much skill there's involved in that, but him getting shot in the hands, might've been the one 'disarming' thing that saved everyone involved from death or further injury. I'm not sure he would've surrendered otherwise, but on the other hand, he was thirsty AF and left out.
Flexing is not good for the containment
One cannot "fuck around and find out" in nuclear diplomacy. Threats are threats and relying on distraction theory here is denial.
Distraction theory may work domestically, but not in diplomacy. Well, unless there's evidence for something worse planned (compare Russia in the security council 2022-02-22).
The office of a mad US president in spe threatening the EU, neighbours and a former colony with violence is newsworthy.
Why? I was always so excited when we got away with it...
