Make sure to cut off the fringe groups who support Trump.

Sure. I just feel somehow that at least here in the Lemmyverse the fringe groups supporting China are more widespread.
It's not some groups in the Lemmyverse. Canada has had a long standing relationship with China. Even through the Cold War. That changed on the surface during the Trump-Biden's reorientation. Now that we're getting heavily fucked by the US, people are reassessing. So by all accounts the Canada-China relationship is strengthening. We'll have to manage it.
Nice framing. Read the entire survey.
- China as a more reliable trade partner for Canada over the U.S., even as favourability remains low
- More Canadians (45%) say they would ideally have Canada do less trade with China than say it’s as a good a trade partner as any (37%).
- One-in-five (21%) say Canada could completely make up economic losses from forgoing this relationship, while three-in-five (60%) believe Canada could trade less with China with minimal economic consequence.
- Three-in-five (61%) describe China’s prominence as an economic power as a “threat to Canadian interests."
- Half of Canadians (53%) say that despite the risk of damage it may do to their country’s relationship with China, they would still pursue a closer relationship with Taiwan.
And across the Lemmyverse there are many supporting China and Russia, including both countries' warfare and aggression. I just read here on Lemmy about a study about Lemmygrad/.ml and the so-called "tankies" which says,
Our results show that users of Lemmygrad/.ml frequently share posts that support authoritarian regimes, as seen in their support for China, North Korea, and Russia. Moreover, their support can extend beyond backing these authoritarian regimes, even cheering on their violent actions, as evidenced by their posts on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, we observe anti-Zionist and antisemitic behaviors, which show similarities to right-wing extremism (Zannettou et al. 2020). Our analysis suggests a concerning endorsement of authoritarian actions and extremist rhetoric on Lemmygrad/.ml, further indicating that left-wing extremist communities on decentralized platforms should receive more attention from the academic community.
Emphasis mine.
Views of China may be warmer amid tensions with the U.S., but that does not mean it is a reliable partner. It's a dictatorship with no real allies.
I have read the entire survey. There's no contradiction. I'm showing there's an obvious reversal of the negative trend and that having a positive opinion of China isn't a fringe opinion in real life in Canada today. Just in case people thought positive attitudes towards China are some terminally-online Lemmy phenomenon. That's it. There's plenty other insight in it.
Well, there might be lots of usernames, but there aren’t that many people… if you get my meaning.
Scotty has about 3-5 accounts. They often show up down/upvoting together when there's no movement on an item or to counterbalance when the majority votes the other way. They have nearly identical style of posting and engagement. Some are created at almost the same time on differrent instances. It's quite easy to spot the pattern if you pay attention.
Which account(s)?
Pretty sure about these - Scotty@scribe.disroot.org, Hotznplotzn@lemmy.sdf.org, randomname@scribe.disroot.org. The second and third were created within about 6 minutes from each other. I think this one too - Sepia@mander.xyz. There are some others that seem to not be in use anymore.
Oh this one seems to be new - tardigrade@scribe.disroot.org.
Yep. They're best laughed off. It's a tiny little conspiracy community, basically, and even when it's true "we're the baddies" has the opposite of popular appeal.
The weird thing is they have to know they're a tiny minority, but they often act shocked we don't all agree with them.
Well, they all sound exactly the same. They go through the same sort of back and forth, link pasting, never answering any question you ask, huge posts with a bunch of nonsense rambling, and then inevitable personal insults trying to shame you for your views. It’s a script followed almost exactly. Back in the “genocide Joe” campaign, they were everywhere.
I found it fun to get them to say the words “Tiananmen Square” because they would flat out refuse and go into a manic spiral.
Where did they come from? I dunno for sure, but I’ve got some thoughts.
I'm afraid it's not fabricated, they exist in real life too. Same sociology as the next conspiracy group, basically, although they recruit from the left and let queer people in. And as a result it's heavily gay/trans/furry.
huge posts with a bunch of nonsense rambling,
There seems to be an idea that the more words you use, the more smarter you are.
Yeah, the China propaganda is widespread, but possibly by users with several alt accounts (if I get your point right). I am quite new here on Lemmy, still learning.
Maybe it's just me but I feel there are not many discussions on any topic, it's more a link builder. But maybe I am mistaken.
Yep, we're in a sticky spot as a country. If I could ask Carney one question, it would be if he's looking at military alliances beyond or overlapping with NATO.
Leveraging a deliberately undervalued Yuan currency, Chinese exports continue to grow at the expense of domestic manufacturing in the U.S., Europe and Canada.
You know, that's bad from a national security standpoint, but it's actually more to our benefit than theirs economically. Basically what they've set up is a system where they give us real, useful stuff in exchange for pieces of paper that go in a pile, and may never be spent.

Yup. And that's where a lot of Canadian profits come from. A shit ton of the commodities we consume come from China, then are (drastically) marked up by some Canadian firm and put on a store/warehouse shelf for sale. Even the stuff we make domestically more often than not contains Chinese components or materials that often have no viable alternative. A sweet deal for some but as you said - it has created a critical dependency.
