This popup was recently introduced in PR-2174.

I don't know exactly why, but voyager prompting me that I'm about to lose my progress was sort of strange to me in the context of scrolling on lemmy.

I understand why someone wants such a feature, but IMO this should be turned off by default and available as an option.

Just check the box, move on.

We asked for it to be on by default and have a "don't ask me again" checkbox. That's what we got.

As someone who also doesn't use this. I disagree.

Its really easy toggle the feature off in the popup itself and its a lot less frustrating to see a warning than to lose your place.

People have been pointing out a common issue with accidentally going back for years. I think this is a simple to implement way to address the issue.

I'm not sure what the expected outcome is here. No Lemmy client I'm aware of is capable of keeping your progress if you leave the feed.

If you don't want to leave the feed, hit cancel. If you do, hit leave. If you like being surprised by losing your place (or you just don't care), check the box and tap "leave."

The ideal would be for you to be able to come back to your place, but that feature isn't implemented yet, server level.

Sync seems to? Unless im misunderstanding here. But I can close it come back like 6 hours later and it will still be where I was. Obviously if I do any additional scrolling since the order of the feed has changed it won't be able to give me the feed as it was but it does at least remember the last page of things I was looking at

I personally think this popup is not a great UX, and the text ("lose progress") is unspecific.

It would be smarter to be able to return to the last feed and position with a simple gesture. Or allowing an option to hide posts that were shown during the last visit.

My desired outcome for this thread is to get some feedback. Apparently, most people here like this change, so I am not going to do anything further.

One of the developers told me it's impossible to return to the last feed position. I don't know why, but, I'm not a programmer. I don't doubt it. It was possible with Reddit clients. Could be something Lemmy hasn't implemented, or hasn't implemented yet.

I’m one of those people who have been clamoring for a way to prevent me from constantly losing my place, and this is not what I had in mind. But if it works it works, and I’ll be happy to have any solution. The issue for me is constantly mis-tapping the Posts button, sometimes with the side of my palm, sometimes when reaching for buttons further away. It happens every day.

A simple solve would just be to give us the option to change what the Posts button does. We already have lots of great ways to customize those buttons, why not one more? I don’t want the Posts button to scroll to the top on first tap and then take me to the communities tab on the next tap. The combination of those behaviors is why I keep losing my place. If the Posts button has to take me out of my feed, then I should always have a way of getting back to the same spot. At the very least, when I tap back into the Home feed it should put me back where I was in that feed (or give me that option). Popups are fine I guess, but I’d rather have a setting.

My ideal behavior: scroll my feed, tap Posts button (on purpose or by accident) end up on list of subscribed communities, tap Home, resume scrolling where I left off. If I want to scroll to the top of my feed I’ll tap the top of my screen (sorry android people) since that’s the default way to do that. The Posts button shouldn’t do something that the OS has a built in behavior for.

Also, I’m on the latest iOS version and don’t see this option in settings. Has it not been rolled out to iOS yet?

It is not yet active for me on iOS.

For me it only triggers when I hit the back button, so that was never a problem for me. I would prefer a way to deactivate gesture for going to the communities list instead, there is plenty to personalise regarding to gestures except that one.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have gestures disabled but I get to the communities list by pressing back.

[–] quediuspayu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

Even disabling all swipes you can still go to the list swiping the left margin to the right.

Over all it is annoying but not much of a problem because I browse hiding the posts I've already seen so I'm never too far from the top.

Inatall the latest version of ~~lemmy~~ Voyager, then it should be on by default. In case you turned it off, you can switch it on again:

Settings / General / (scroll down) / confirm back from Home ...

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Latest version of Voyager*

[–] cron@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

Thanks, obviously you're correct

[–] Buelldozer@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thanks. It's there and its enabled but it doesn't do a darn thing. :(

[–] cron@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

It works only on the "back" event from android navigation, not the "back error" on top of the screen.

[–] Retro_unlimited@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

When I loose my feed position it’s usually 2 things.

  • I accidentally swipe over to another screen.
  • I accidentally click the top of the screen and the feed scrolls ALL the way to the top…. F#*%
