Looking for recommendations of games you think translate well to a Let's Play.

Here's a few I've watched as some examples:

  • Dispatch
  • Dead Space: Remake
  • Dave the Diver
  • Outer Wilds
  • Claire Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Black Myth: Wukong

Some games I want to play for myself, but others I'd rather just watch. Either I don't want to buy it, or maybe the game mechanics don't interest me but the story does. (Dispatch falls under that category.)

Any other ideas?

Stray. I dont watch people play games but I think the game fits nicely as a cinematic and its fun to play.

[–] Dalacos@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Watched it near release, loved it. +1

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 5 points 4 days ago

In the line of cinematic games, maybe Journey also?
Maybe Songs for a Hero too, but do mind it has two dubbings (Portuguese and English) and they sound different from each other.

[–] salvaria@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Ooh, I think Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero may be good for you to watch. Subnautica has really nice exploration mechanics and Outer Wilds reminds me of it in that aspect :)

[–] Dalacos@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

I started a Let's Play of that and liked it so much I quit early on and now it's on a (lengthy) backlist of games I want to actually play. It looks really fun and I love the aesthetic.

I like watching people play Super Mario World romhacks. Grand Poo World is big and the streamer who made it (barbarousking) is entertaining

[–] SandLight@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I believe in Barbarous King

Also, it's been fun watching everyone play Dram 3.

I think the Quantic Dream games (Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain, etc.) work well to watch since there isn't much to miss out in the gameplay, mostly just walking, talking, and QTEs. The writing varies wildly in quality, so it's often a MST3K-like experience with the game being mocked (at least ones I've watched), just depends whose playthrough you're watching.

Heavy Rain is the best if someone's got the SHAAAWN glitch.

I would recommend Noah Caldwell-Gervais's Channel for excellent series retrospectives and long form scripted gaming content.

Josh Strife Hayes may be interesting to you either scripted retrospectives or twitch stream VODs

Finally the Let's Drown Out series of videos by Yahtzee Croshaw and Gabriel Morton are some of the best Let's Play content I have watched - though they are quite old now.

All of the old scummVM adventure games; Sam and max hit the road, monkey island, day of the tentacle, etc

For something more cinematic I'd look at platinum games like Bayonetta, god of wars, mass effects, gears, half-lifes, dark souls

I would avoid something really puzzle heavy like professor Layton or tactical like civ or Stellaris I enjoy watching/listening to people play games but those usually can't hold my interest unless I'm playing

Edit: a couple more recent titles to add are Pentiment and Kentucky route zero

[–] Cybersteel@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Edited let's plays is a dying art, in favour of streaming wholesale. Anyways here are some that may interest you.

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Not really. Both have their place like live TV and a rerun channel.

SovietWomble has some great let's plays!

The next two are long-form supercuts of a bunch of streams:

I don't remember if I've ever seen Womble's Goose Game. I love this so much.

I'm a goose

I enjoyed Chip Cheezum and General Ironicus' playthroughs of the Metal Gear Solid series back in the day, and their 50 Cent: Blood in the Sand playthrough was good. Oh, and the Uncharted series. Chip is very thorough. They're still putting stuff out to this day.

Also, I know they're all dated now, but I still miss Super Best Friends Plays and go back and rewatch their stuff now and then.

All games I had no interest in playing myself, but wanted to know what they were about.

[–] villainy@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

For MGS I will always recommend Giant Bomb's old Metal Gear Scanlon series going through all 5 main games, Peace Walker, and Rising.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Did they show every instance of a character called Johnny shitting his pants? There's one in every game. Like I said, Chip is thorough.

[–] villainy@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Dan Ryckert would never miss a poop joke. Every Johnny Sasaki is thoroughly covered.

[–] deafboy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Doki Doki Literature Club

The absolute strangest 6 and a half hours spent in front of the screen.

What about A Plague Tale: Innocence and A Plague Tale: Requiem played by Amicia's (main protagonist) voice actress?

Pacific Drive?

It's a great game with a great story ( that I kinda rushed through because I couldn't enjoy the constant tension - instead the couple playthroughs I watched were very enjoyable )

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 3 points 4 days ago

I love the aesthetic, having had just such a car in just such a place when I was younger. Watching Pacific Drive makes me so nostalgic.

Highly recommend Voices of the Void

A semi horror/base management game where you're a lone Doctor of Astrophysics on a radio signal listening station in the Swiss Alps, tasked with cleaning up the trashed base, maintaining servers, the site transformers running so you have power to lock your doors, and collecting extraterrestrial signals.

You may or may not be alone, if you can't save the game, then it's definitely more 'may' than 'may not'.

Recently updated to v0.9 (unstable but functional) with a Christmas event active this month. Even as a game still in alpha it's worth the pricetag, currently on itch.io under mrdrnose, believe there's plans for it to end up on steam.

TearofGrace (TearofDisgrace on youtube) is a proper character of a guy, livestreams it at least once a week and recently put out a video of his exploits in v0.8

[–] MilkToast@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'd recommend Materwelonz' Outer Wilds gameplay

WARNING: Play this game yourself first or you will be spoiled forever!

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 1 points 3 days ago

Yay, I wanted to recommend Welonz as well. I especially loved her Silent Hill 2 playthrough. I found her through Baldur's Gate 3.

[–] orenj@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The original NieR is best watched as an LP. I liked the old SBFP LP.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I'm currently watching videos of "The Last Caretaker". Still in development / public beta, but nicely done.

[–] HollowNaught@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Thoroughly enjoyed a supercut of Jerma's elden ring playthrough

That was some top tier second screen content

I think Research Indicates' Jurassic Park: Trespasser let's play from 2008 is still the greatest let's play of all time. It was from the early days of high effort LPs on Something Awful, and while Trespasser is a very interesting game for multiple reasons, it's also an unfinished mess that is better watched than played (if you could even get it to work).

[–] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 days ago

There's quite a fanbase for "No, I'm not a Human". It's a post apocalyptic horror game. It's perfect to watch cause of the multiple endings and very simple gameplay.

[–] OrdinaryDemiGuy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Just look up the youtuber Mapocolops. You’re welcome.

[–] radiouser@crazypeople.online 1 points 4 days ago

I really enjoyed watching Oxhorn play Silent Hill 2 remake, well, once he stopped smashing windows obsessively. Also enjoyed games like The Quarry, Until Dawn etc but they might not be your type of thing.

[–] Guitar@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Lil' Indigestion has a great blind playthrough of Outer Wilds. I would also recommend About Oliver's Outer Wilds series as well. They also have great playthroughs of Subnautica.

[–] Suck_on_my_Presence@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

For Dispatch-likes, perhaps other Telltale games would interest you. The Wolf Among Us was really good if I remember correctly. And the Walking Dead games were... a lot, emotionally, but good stories, the first one especially.

But gosh there's just so many games out there. Maybe a Breath of the Wild playthrough would be up your alley.
A Hollowknight let's play might be a bit boring, but I'm certain a lore video would be engaging.
Thomas Was Alone - that's an older game so I couldn't tell you if there's any good videos of it, but it's great.
Along similar ~old~ lines, BioShock games are good. And Dishonored in that same era/vein.

Killer Frequency might also be in the realm of Dispatch. Potentially Potionomics as well.

And any and all Supergiant games I think are great to watch or play. Loads of content in that company. And great songs :3

[–] orenj@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 3 days ago

Hmm, maybe. I've seen Vinesauce Vinny's rimworld LPs at they're kinda fun, but I think playing it yourself's a lot less frustrating.

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

If you like variety gaming yt you can check out youtubers like

Satiire, who tries to platinum random ps games,

Kong, that showcases strange (mostly bad) games,

Kedvuit, who's got a great spirit and loves to showcase strange shovelware,

planet clue, which is also cool but I can't easily categorize just yet,

Noah Caldwell-Gervais, if you want very intricate scripts and commentary

Open Clubs, who has the "Worst platformer ever" series,

Super bunny hop

It's jabo and joov do fallout/skyrim content

Shagrots cave is pvc2 challenges.

Basement brothers does oldschool rpgs.

For "I just want let's play games" I recommend checking out speedrunning marathons.

[–] BenLeMan@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago

I liked ChristopherOdd's playthrough of The Last of Us

He's generally a good blend of entertaining and chill, with great video quality. Think he did part 2 as well.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 0 points 4 days ago

Last of us and rimworld

[–] mesamunefire@piefed.social 0 points 4 days ago

There's a ton on the wholesome game bundle that are interesting.
