Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Let me put this in my conservative translator and see what we get...set the dial to projection and voila!

"Europe is making bold decisions across the board from Defense to court cases fining American tech giants. I'm scared and my diaper needs changing."

aw man, the demented is talking about himself again :/

Trump is a degenerative piece of shit, but in this regard he is correct: Europe is slow and cowardly even in a situation when Europe itself is in danger. But Trump doesn't offer any solution, so... ok?

Slow and rational is quite nice in this geopolical chaos... i'd rather have a slow EU than a "move fast and break things" system like the US

[–] Humanius@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

The issue with slow and rational is the slow part. Usually that is no issue, but sometimes you have to act fast in order to not be caught with your pants down.

Our dependence on the US and the Russian threat are such a situation where we have to be able to act fast and decisively.

You are absolutely right, but when it came to COVID, the EU reacted very rapidly, in line with the USA or UK. So it's a choice, not a structural problem. They just don't think a rapid response is opportune.

[–] Humanius@lemmy.world 1 points 44 minutes ago* (last edited 43 minutes ago)

I may be misremembering how the COVID response went, but I remember the EU not doing a whole lot in the early days of the pandemic. It was mostly national governments locking down and taking precautions within their own borders.

Don't get me wrong, I like the EU. But it is times like these when I wished it was a little faster to respond to existential threats.

Yes, just ask Putin to wait until you are ready. No need to hurry.

[–] Noblebuttcheeky@piefed.social 9 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

He can't conquer the Ukraine for 3 years now. It seems we don't even need to ask. Good job, bot.

Oof Level: EXTREME!

[–] Lembot_0006@programming.dev -4 points 19 hours ago

So you expect that Ukraine would be able to defend you forever? Just throw a few planes there and a dozen tankettes from time to time? Ok, keep your pace. Who cares about those dying Ukrainians? And Putin also won't be in Warsaw tomorrow. And most probably not even day after that. All is well.

Europe is slow and cowardly even in a situation when Europe itself is in danger

It's slow because we are 27 sovereign nations. It's by design. I wouldn't say that we are acting cowardly. We do not act "American" since we are Europeans. We do not need to be the loudest on the table. We have economic interests and until now the EU could definitely be worse.

If Don Fanta openly "slams" European Leaders for being weak, what does this tell you? That this one time he tells the truth or that he wishes it was true? I bet on the later.

Orban is also shitting on the EU's head by design? No, the EU is slower than it should. But of course Trump isn't the guy whose opinions are useful. Even a broken clock...

[–] Noblebuttcheeky@piefed.social 7 points 20 hours ago

Yes, Orban's talking is by russian design.

It just Shows that Trump does Not understand how democracies work at all. Decisions are not made by a Government and laws are not enacted by a "strong" Leader, but by representatives in a sitting parliament. what he wants is for the Western world to act more Like him, in the way of dictatorships. Because those he can rule with Power alone, be it economical or militaristic.

and with our Double democracy (one at national, the 2nd at european Level) he cant do that easily, because at the european Level we Pack a Punch of soft Power on the international Stage. which makes it harder for him to devide us and influence our actions. Any smaller, less powerful Nation otherwise would be a direct target of US Influence, See Venezuela or in the History all the us-powered coup'de'etat in south america

Europe ‘doesn’t know what to do

...says the one who knows exactly what to do.

Every day.

But it is ... just a bit ... completely different every day.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 3 points 33 minutes ago

Again, every accusation is a confession.

I said it months ago: if we don’t have a unified army to support our power, we won’t be able to match Latin America’s economic and political influence. The window of opportunity is closing, and it’s closing fast
