So does Canada! Please let us buy them too!
So does the US. Pretty happy with my Pixel 6 pro running grapheneOS but I hope Jolla phones become available here.
Yeah GrapheneOS in itself is fine, I just don't trust the future of AOSP.
/ex-Sony Mobile AOSP manager (dev. program)
As ex-Sony Mobile AOSP manager, you got any extra insight into problems coming? From the outside it looks like a storm is coming.
I have no trust in Google being - at all - interested in developing AOSP. That shift could be seen already back then (almost a decade ago) and has just become worse since.
The hope for an open source community driven platform lies elsewhere. If it's Ubuntu Touch, Sailfish or something completely different I don't know - but to get there we need to stop the delusion that an AOSP fork will do. That way we'll always be tied to whatever Google decides to do.
I fear we need to get governments to force competition to be allowed. Phones are a hell scape duopoly and Google are closing the nose. This isn't a thing to fight just with tech, we need to be fighting politically. Though all I do is a monthly payment to OpenRightsGroup for over a decade. Politicians, like most of the population, are completely unable to perceive the problem. If it was cars or TV or something else physical, they would get it.
I have the 2013 Jolla. While it's desperately outdated, it's the last smartphone I actually enjoyed using.
Absolute favorite being N900, but that's another life altogether.
N9 club here. AFAIK some of the guys working for Jolla are original N9 devs. Obligatory Fuck Elop, if not for him we would be living in an alternate universe.
N9 gang! There were dozens of us! That was the last phone I truly enjoyed using.
I had the first Jolla phone (2015?) and it was okay, but the ecosystem is (was) very shaky. A few apps worked very well, thanks for volunteers and OSS projects but the overall experience was not amazing. Plus some services actively fight against, I remember issues for instance between WhatsApp and the mitakuulu app.
Not to me too many bank apps refuse to work outside what they see as secure android environments.
That was one of the things that forced me from de-googled LineageOS to GrapheneOS. A compromise without being compromised. I'd like to run a proper Linux phone, but the bad apps forced into my life isn't going anyway, and less and less with run on a freed Android phone. The problem is political not technical, too many of us nerds are fighting the wrong front. (Partly, because the political from is too much human interaction to face.)
Never used stock Google (Cyanogen, Lineage, now Calyx), never had a problem with my banking apps (at least three). Maybe my banks are just cool / unsafe ๐ธ
My bank for work is super uncool. It requires the app to even auth web access on your desktop. The app refused to run on LineageOS despite the tricks I tried. It will run on GrapheneOS, for now. Why is it legal to block phone OS flavours??
The other gotta is navigation with traffic info. OrganicMaps is great, the maps are lovely, but without traffic into, the routing just keeps failing me badly. I need an open satnav with traffic info. Traffic flow should be open access, but it's all wall gardened. Least in UK.
On your last point, most traffic monitoring is by the apps tracking everyone via Google (etc), not wires under the roads
So, we'd need a LOT of people to be aware of the benefits of tracking for a specific app / backend before anyone would start using it.
If we could get at the car tracking data the manufacturers use, that would be a start
Traffic info requires people to share their location data with Google, so expecting traffic info while actively fighting against the method of collecting it is a bit hypocritical.
Yeah, Bank apps and anything that has to do with money, even the parking app in my city, or the public transport app...
Ah Mitakuulu, here is one for our fallen ๐ฅ
I wish they would include details of what CPU it will have.
It's a Mediatek SoC.
I know but that's not really specific enough. I'd like to know what I'm getting before (pre-)ordering.
Ah, it looked interesting but then I have learned that their operating system, Sailfish OS, is non-free ๐ฅ I would rather use LineageOS or GrapheneOS - to protect my freedom.
Only the Sailfish UI is proprietary. Ubuntu touch might also be worth considering for you.
For android -instead of Lineage, have a look at e/OS (especially paired with fairphone)
I see mental outlaw I upvote
