  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).

  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

The worst-case scenario is now a possible one: European troops fighting off an invasion largely alone

It’s by no means clear the Europeans would succeed. Romanian and other European officials at the exercise in Cincu, about 260 kilometers (162 miles) north of Bucharest by road, voiced concerns about how long it would take for NATO allies to make it to the front.

French four-star General Philippe de Montenon said he’s confident Europe could prevail, even without the US on side.

“The direction of history is a progressive disengagement of the United States from the European continent,” he said.

What I’m afraid of, is if the US decides to join Russia against Europe….

I'm pretty sure Trump and at least some of his underlings already have. The Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact 2.0. The US takes whatever it can get from Canada, Greenland and Central-/South-America and Russia gets free hand in Europe, possibly supported by China. Maybe China gets Taiwan. Watching Trunps actions, I think this is a real possibility. Nobody should trust the US.

Honestly… what are y'all talking about in these comments?

I’m seeing calls for massive build up, when your voters are shooting down even the tiniest tax and changes hikes to fund them. You can’t even agree to use frozen Russian assets.

I’m seeing a lot of ‘Euro pride’ when isolationist far right parties are making big gains, every election, across Europe.

Meanwhile, a single country (with sufficient weapons supplying) is holding off all of Russia, and Russia's allies, yet Russia is dangerously strained. You guys have plenty of capability, and plenty more to buy from the US, all locked behind inter-country squabbling.

For heaven's sake, take us Americans as a warning. Take care of your backyard dysfunction, fast.

Cut off big tech, nip blooming facism in the bud instead of acting like it’s not right around the corner.

Otherwise helping Ukraine is going to end up about as well our military excursions have, and canon more Trumpists into power faster than you can blink.

While you are basically right, consider this as well:

I’m seeing calls for massive build up, when your voters are shooting down even the tiniest tax

Afaik, most Europeans are for an independent army and build-up and ofcourse people don't like new taxes.

nip blooming facism in the bud instead

Far-right and far left movements are indeed a problem. That's a bit of worldwide phenomenon though. There are some unique problems Europe is facing, which lead to extra fear and worry. Some people then tend to vote for extreme measures and isolationist policies. There are many anti-fascism & anti-disinfo movements and initiatives too. The hybrid propaganda wars and recent agressions have caused renewed coldwar fears with some.

They are working on that, but it takes time though to rebuild the old military complex, but they are getting there. Also, European Union is just a project, most thing need to be decided by unanimous vote, that's 27 votes. Secondly, earlier initiatives to gain some military autonomy, were torpedoed by USA, which caused extra inertia.

of course people don’t like new taxes.

Also, European Union is just a project, most thing need to be decided by unanimous vote, that’s 27 votes

This is what I'm saying! Y'all need a tighter federal system, fast. And of course learn from the mistakes of the US/Russia.

but it takes time though to rebuild the old military complex, but they are getting there.

There are many anti-fascism & anti-disinfo movements and initiatives too.

And (with all due respect) you don't get what I'm saying.

You don't need, nor have time for a military complex! Europe has a lot, can supplement it with frugal efforts (like making drones), and buy the rest.

And the countermeasures aren't enough. All the 'initiatives' in the world aren't going to stop folks getting brainwashed on Facebook, Twitter or or whatever.

...What you need is urgency and unity. European countries are going to have to pay more taxes, and sign up for systems they do not like, and see the psycological threat facing their population, or its all going to hell.

Nope.. not getting your message bro. EU is hitting defense spending €570 B in 2025, and €624 B or more in 2026. We need to work on more atack planes to have a better balance.

Together we have like a minimum of 500 nuclear warheads. For now it's sufficient to offer some deterrence to most enemies, but we are building more. We have new inter-member alliances popping up on a regular bases, in the style of coalition of the willing. There is one in the north too. The EU has also been establishing new bilateral defense pacts with other allied countries like with U.K., Canada & Japan.

@HowRu68
Picking up on one thing here; Genuine question:

Where do you see problems with the far _left_?

The right is in all our faces everywhere, but the left?

[–] HowRu68@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

but the left?

There are some traditional communist & socialists pro-Ruz parties ( GUE/NGL). See this older post

" TLDR: Pro-Kremlin sentiment in the chamber is mostly found at its political fringes. On one end sit members of The Left, the far-left group, and on the other, the newly formed far-right alliances — PfE and ESN.

The far left according to wiki.

Estonia's total population : 1 million people

Latvia's total population : 1.8 million people

Lettonia's total population : 1.8 million people

This is why I'm genuinely ENRAGED when I see French politicians like Jean-Luc Mélenchon or Marine Lepen attack NATO. You motherfuckers. Go read some actual history books. NATO isn't the big bad wolf. The Soviet Union was. The Russans murdered, raped, tortured people for decades. They built a fucking IRON WALL to prevent people from escaping. NATO is now the only thing that protects these small democracies.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon even said:

"I don't care about the Baltics. I don't feel we have anything in common with them. Are they even part of Europe ?"

Fucking piece of shit

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 days ago

Completely agree. The EU needs to arm and make itself a toothed wolf, ready against US, Russian, and Chinese imperialism, playing them out against each other!

“This is the first time in the last 70 years that the Europeans no longer perceive American security guarantees as guarantees,” she said.

Who came to that conclusion already in November 2025?

[–] HowRu68@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Well maybe this report from October 29 has something to do with it.

But yes I get your point, that's how politics unfortunately work.

[–] Rolder@reddthat.com 2 points 3 days ago

Well, if Ukraine can manage the feat largely alone (minus weapons aid) then I’m sure Europe in general can manage it. Poland is probably just waiting for them to try it
