Reminded me of when took my boys to Yellowstone. On the way we stop in a town that 100% would not exist without tourists. Yet every restaurant and diner were actively hostile towards us. Fucking locals could not stand that we were there and they refused to serve us. We left and had to get breakfast at a McDonald's few towns away.

No, but I'm from Taiwan and I get that feeling when being a tourist in a touristy area.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I'm going to Japan and will avoid most of the tourist areas. No Kyoto or Osaka for me.

[–] jaschen306@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Please go visit those areas. These areas have so many things to do and things to see. You just have to be mindful of their culture.

When eating at restaurants, you should mind the volume of your voice. The only exception is places that serves alcohol(places like BBQ and late night places).

Follow the rules. There are lines for the trains, don't cross those lines. Smoking in very specific area. Do not walk and eat your food on the street(no clue the reasoning behind this, but was told by many locals).

You're a guest in their country. Some Americans have that alpha/asshole privilege mentality. As long as you're respectful, you will get the best experience.

There are a couple more rules that i forgot, but I'm sure a YouTube search can get the rest.

Please enjoy Japan and if you have time, come visit Taiwan!

I'll be Tokyo for the last leg of my trip. The plan is to visit Sapporo, Sendai, Hakone, and Tokyo.

I'm from Mumbai which is an overwhelming city so I'm deliberately going to Northern part of Japan for hopefully some peace before coming to Tokyo. Maybe I'll visit other parts some other time. There's still plenty to see.

And I've been following Japan travel related subreddits since last month or so. Almost everyone has emphasised on not eating while walking. I didn't even consider that as a thing. Maybe other than eating ice cream or drinking soda.

The cruise tourists benefit my life in no way. They come off the ship and buy a stupid shirt that says Canada on it from one of the Chinese owned gift shops then they go back onto the boat and dump sewage into my ocean.

Can't even go to tofino anymore as a local who literally subsidizes all that infrastructure with my tax dollars. Have to compete with the rest of the planet for campsites and can't even enjoy my own backyard anymore

Don't even get me started on the amount of literal human shit littered across the island at the end of summer

Nah fuck the tourists, nasty animals

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Yeah our town has more tourist capacities than actual residents. It sucks to live there in the summer. Traffic out the wazoo and fucking tourists who cannot even be bothered to speak english when adressing you everywhere.

Whoever made this meme doesn't live in a city where new houses are bought up to be turned into shitty airbnbs

How do you know?

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 1 points 11 hours ago

Same with university towns. Look at all the fookin students coming into our pubs and businesses and spending their lah-di-dah money.

[–] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 hours ago

Oh I see you've visited Barcelona. Oh, and Annecy, my previous hometown.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 1 points 11 hours ago

We got lighted crosswalks! Why are you randomly walking in the street‽

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 0 points 12 hours ago

NIMBY are the worst.

I once stayed in a long stay and everywhere I went staff would be complaining about long stays. Meanwhile the population was like 3 people and given their location their town could never survive without long stays holding it up. Like we are talking that their resorts had to refit to do BNB long stay or close down. That was their only option to survive. You could clearly see they Overbuilt.

Like ok…we could leave if you really don’t want us there . But so will all your amenities and your jobs.. the very amenities and jobs that are only there because we’re bringing you the money to have them.

Pick a lane.
