I love ente, but it doesn't fit this community by the way.

collapsed inline media

Not wanting to sound pedantic tho, sorry.

Thatโ€™s why I choose Jotta cloud over Ente, even though I think that Ente might be a better iCloud replacement

Are they open source?

Never heard of them, but reading their privacy policy:

When you register with Jottacloud, you provide us with your name, your email address and phone number hereinafter referred to as Personal Data.

I just use https://filen.io/ for storage and ente for pictures. Nothing wrong with jotta if it works for you though.

Also, ente is FOSS and self hostable. In that case it doesn't really matter where it's based.

It kinda does if they are required to add a hidden cleverly obfuscated backdoor.

Indeed, sorry. Seems like it can still be self hosted based on another comment?

I looked at this. There is something to be said of hosting your photos separately from your documents, but to me it doesn't seem worth the money. Anyone has a good experience with Ente / seperate photo hosting? I also hear good things about Immich by the way.
