After 12 years in prison, dude probably has nothing left. Family spent everything to make sure he could be inflatedly expensive socks and toothbrushes that the bristles don't fall out of and get stuck in your teeth. I hope he can get back on his feet with whatever the 50% is

Yeah if there's one thing the system loves, it's leaving ex-cons destitute and likely to reoffend because they can't function on the outside.

As with any business, repeat customers are key

[–] Schmoo@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Customers, pfff. You mean slaves.

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Bro, we live under capitalism. It doesnt matter what he calls them, the slavery is implied

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Except that in American private prisons it's perfectly legal to force someone to manufacture goods for sale without paying them. Slavery was banned in the USA.... except in prison.

In related news, the USA incarcerates a huge proportion of its population compared to other countries, and the incarceration rate for black men is disproportionately high.

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Its a lot deeper than that. Living under capitalism means you dont eat if you dont work. Working is enforced by threat of violence. Literally all us except the rich are slaves

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I get that, but it feels like you're minimising the perpetuation of actual slavery in the USA by the private prison industry and by biased and unfair sentencing.

A lot of the black guys in prison are there for extraordinarily long sentences for extremely minor offences like smoking weed or stealing food from the supermarket, they don't have freedom, they don't gave a family life, all they have is working for the profit of the prison and awful accommodation.

You or I on the outside have at least some freedom to go where we like and be with who we like outside working hours, and might even be able to switch to another job. Not so if you're incarcerated.

Oh yeah no i didnt mean to come off that way. 100% people in provate prisons have it way worse. Like, i have no clue how it is legal to pay someone 30 cents an hour for forced labor. Its... surprising to me that anyone lets themselves get arrested alive.

I had a plumber do work on my house, and then never cashed the check. Around $1k if I remember correctly.

I needed him to come out to disconnect a 100-year-old radiator that fell off the wall and cap the pipes so we could keep the heat on in the house.

It was an emergency, of course, so I basically called the first person who could come out and do the work. I never really expected to ever be in touch with him again. By the time I realized he didn't cash the check, I no longer had his contact info.

I tried looking up the name on the check, but it didn't lead to anything.

If he showed up today and told me he lost the check, I'd give him a new one.

However, although his work was fine, his whole vibe was a little shady. Like maybe he took the job right before fleeing the country. Either that or he dropped dead.

After about a year I voided the check in my accounting software.

Hey it's me, shady plumber guy. New check pls

Hey it's me, shady plumber guy. I forgot where you live.

[–] waigl@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It would be pretty mean to not pay him that point – but technically, I'm pretty sure he cannot legally demand payment after quite that much time. Pretty sure purely civil claims expire after some time of not being pressed.

Once the statute of limitations is hit, they can't legally respond if you refuse to pay. Kind of an odd ethical dillema, but presumably you'd have the money to pay, and the work was done.

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Statute of limitations alone would kill any case he has, but even if it didn't, he would be required to be able to show a court proof of debt owed, which it sounds like he wouldn't be able to

[–] trepX@sh.itjust.works 7 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

He was in prison for 12 years. You legit owe him money. He knows where you live. End of discussion

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

That's not really how it works legally. But rightfully, yes.

[–] blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It's how it works if you want to feel like your family is safe.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 5 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Because everyone who was in prison will kill your family for a few hundred dollars. Yes.

[–] trepX@sh.itjust.works 0 points 13 hours ago

Ok let me spell it out. We don't know if it's a few hundred dollars and it doesn't matter. We don't know why he was in prison, but if he got 12 years, it won't be drunk driving. If someone did sth before they're more likely to do it again. You got your work done, and didn't pay up. The guy can use a bit of cash to get back on their feet. Basically, there is no serious argument why you wouldn't pay the dude apart from you being a massive cunt, both morally and just general self preservation.

Honestly, I'd probably pay them what I owe plus interest - I can sleep well and the dude is going to be happy.
