Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik announced she is running for governor of New York early Friday morning, after months of hinting that she might challenge Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in the 2026 election.

Stefanik launched her campaign with a post on social media, calling Hochul "the worst governor in America."

Hochul shared a statement of her own, calling the congresswoman President Trump's "number one cheerleader in Congress and his right-hand woman in his war on New York."

"Apparently, screwing over New Yorkers in Congress wasn't enough – now she's trying to bring Trump's chaos and skyrocketing costs to our state," the governor wrote. "While Stefanik puts Trump first and New York last, Governor Hochul is lowering costs, cutting middle-class taxes, and fighting for the New Yorkers Stefanik abandoned."

I sized her up when she covered for Trump for his first impeachment.

She's a lying, manipulative, amoral climber who will do anything to advance her profile.

Her helping try to overthrow the government on Jan 6 showed that I had her figured right.

She's one of the worst vipers in the whole nest.

She’s like Nancy Mace but on medication.

Yup. Sounds just like a Republican to me.

Lolol, this lady cannot stop finding ways to embarrass herself. She's SERIOUSLY thinking she's beloved for some reason, and doesn't get why people keep dumping on her crazy ass

I really hope her family see how much NY hates her.

I mean she is beloved in the north country. That's the problem.

Crazy to announce that immediately after your party got obliterated in the elections. Maybe give it a minute before saying anything?

She has no chance after they just elected Zohran as mayor. And he won against not only Cuomo, Sliwa, but all the billionaires who put money into trying to defeat him, plus the news outlets trying to paint a horrid picture which was all misinformation and propaganda.

It’s painting the picture that the GOPs are scared of the upcoming 2026 mids but still are putting the worst people forward once again.

She thinks she’s loved but smart voters know she’s nothing more than another damn puppet for Drumpf!

I'd like her to be primaried. She's better than Cuomo, but she was his lieutenant gov and it shows. Her mishearing "Tax the rich" as "Let's go Bills" bullshit really illustrates her place as a corporate Democrat.

Cutting middle class taxes? How?
