Although WWII bombs destroyed his house and the garden, on the banks of the Outer Alster Lake, in 1943, the sculpture emerged unscathed.

I'm not the creator, but I assume it's pointing out the absurd juxtaposition of living in a crumbling civilization on a warming planet, yet being forced to continue doing such banal things as buying food in order to survive.
Now that I'm thinking about it, it seems to me more like setting up to be a message of solidarity. But then when you get to the bottom and see little caesars, you realize that they are only encouraging you to survive to sell more pizzas.
That's probably a good read on it.
