The system isn't broken, it's doing exactly what it's designed for.

I'd argue not really designed at all. Capitalism occurred rather organically. The incentive structure underlying it is emergent. It was more successful at self reinforcement than all other models. The problem is that there hasn't been a ton design to tweak the system to align it to societal goals. This means the self reinforcement continues whether it makes the world better or not. You need design to mold the self perpetuating system into having an incentive structure that aligns with societal goals.

The current state is due to lack of design, not based on design.

Exactly. It isn't Intelligent Design, it's Natural Selection. By which I mean there's no grand plan, it's just a vicious, bloody system.

Speaking as someone with a PhD in Biology, nature usually sucks. There's horrifying parasites, predators that will eat you while you're still alive, and even herbivores can eat themselves into extirpation if not outright extinction.

The metaphor breaks down because there's a lot of beauty in nature, and I think we need to protect it, but it's not something we should try to emulate at a societal level. Natural selection doesn't think ahead, it just happens, and most living things suffer out in the natural world. Most of us are smart enough to do better, I hope.

The title of the post does.

I'm bad at picking titles. But I do agree with what you guys are saying.

If you work really hard, sometime you too can be a billionaire and take away poor childrens' lunch money!

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 12 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

You can work hard for a thousand years straight and you still won't be a billionaire,
You gotta exploit really hard

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 6 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

If you got a million dollars every day, paid no taxes, groceries, mortgage, anything like that, you'd have a little over a billion after three years. If you made that much money from the day you turned 15 to the day you turn 75, for sixty years of hard work, you'd have 22 billion.

Not 450 like Musk. Not 250 like Bezos. Not 120 like Gates. Nowhere near any of the people you associate with the word Billionaires.

There is no job that will earn you a million per day, but if there was, it still wouldn't be enough to reach the top 100 of Bloomberg's index over a lifetime of work.

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

So the secret is to pull yourself up by the bootstraps, and work 20 jobs at the same time all paying 1 million a day

Poor people often work 2 jobs paying minimum wage, that's 18 jobs too few and 999960$/day/job too little pay

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 3 points 13 hours ago

See, you've got it all figured out!

So get off of Lemmy, those 20 jobs won't do themselves! You don't want to be fired, do you?

[–] falseWhite@lemmy.world 14 points 19 hours ago

I think that's enough avocado toast for you. The system is perfect.
