Ideally, I'd love for Dems to just start taking credit for everything MAGA brags about. Since apparently the Republicans aren't in charge.

One of the double speaks an authoritarian spokesperson has to perform is the opposition is both strong and weak at the same time. Strong, so they can be blamed for anything that goes wrong, and to stoke fears in the faithful, and weak because no one is allowed to be stronger than the authority.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 33 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I know that is 1984, but it really reminds me of the "could god create a boulder so large that he could not lift it" thought experiment.

[–] Sternout@feddit.org 21 points 4 days ago

The christian god does seem to have some stuff in common with an authoritarian dictator.

Nah nah nah dawg.

The antifa deep state led by Soros and his Jewish space lizards are holding the government hostage. Except Israel, those guys is cool.

And the Democrats have also made abundantly clear what the Republicans have to do in order to get their votes.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 43 points 4 days ago (8 children)

For the unaware, the Democrat leadership are asking that the rate hikes for US health insurance are reversed, some individual US senators might have slightly different demands but the GOP need 7 more votes to pass a budget resolution.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 33 points 4 days ago (5 children)

See this is what I don't understand. They need 7 more votes to enter a continuence, not a budget. If they wanted to re-open the government they could have actually wrote a budget, and reconciled that budget, using only 51 votes for all the portions closed down.. then argued about the portions they can't get passed (cutting health care). There is nothing that the Democrats can do to block an actual budget reconciliation being done.

Stop kicking the can down the road with a "continuence" and draw up a budget. This whole thing seems to me like they can't get Republicans to agree on a budget, to get 51 votes

Please please can we stop trying to catch their lies? ALL THEY EVER DO IS LIE. It's not a gotcha. It's pointless. Their people don't care and we all know they are full of shit. You can't beat a fascist in discourse.

[–] Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone 48 points 4 days ago (2 children)

It's not just important to discourse. It's important to know when they're lying, even if that is always, and more importantly, what the truth is. You cannot let only their narrative exist

[–] ZoopZeZoop@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago

Yes, plus, it's not the people who already know they constantly lie that they are trying to convince. It's the people who don't pay a lot of attention and occasionally get something. They're trying to tell that person that Democrats are doing this for them.

Documenting all of it is really important, even though it's fucking exhausting.

Ultimately it isn't really for fascists or the willfully ignorant to be swayed; it's so that in the future humanity is able to review and learn lessons to improve upon the past.

I hope.

Well, not so nice this day without a spine.

[–] FunctionallyLiterate@lemmy.ca 27 points 4 days ago

If the Dems were in charge, they'd have sworn in the representative-elect from Arizona that he refuses to by now.

[–] AutistoMephisto@lemmy.world 22 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It would make sense, wouldn't it? It would be hilarious to see how fast the entire Republican party would spin if Democrats started taking credit for all the terrible shit Republicans have done with their power.

[–] Quadhammer@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oh my God that would be genius lmao. Also no way it could backfire

[–] AutistoMephisto@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I know you're being sarcastic. It would absolutely destroy their chances of ever holding office, but if Dems don't win the midterms, that's it. They may as well close up the Party HQs, retire from politics and IDK, take up knitting or something.

Obviously you are imagining things the only things the Republicans have is a majority in the House and Senate, the support of the supreme Court, the White House and the richest man in the world and most oligarchs. Oh and some really crazy fascist MAGA cultists. It's practically nothing and these crazy people act like they run the government. I mean really.

MAGA doesn't care about reality, all they care about is hating those that aren't them.

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 23 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I mean Trump's policies are actively destroying everything and farmers. But no matter what he does, they will blame the democrats and their base will eat it up. It is perfect. You can do whatever the hell you want and you win no matter how shitty everything gets.

Did the democrats make you go to Grindr too Mike?

Their display looks like a high school civics class project.

[–] sturmblast@lemmy.world 29 points 3 days ago

Republicans have never demonstrated the ability to govern in my life time.

[–] BetaBlake@lemmy.world 27 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Mike Johnson wants to kiss boys and he's real mad about it

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago

If his texts are any indication, he wants to do more than kiss, and has done so on many occasions.

So, what they're saying is they've been lying about having a mandate all this time.

[–] eRac@lemmings.world 24 points 4 days ago

You don't understand! The public gave them a mandate, but Democrats stole enough seats to take control anyway! From the shadows!!!

their words mean nothing because they are all lies. only their actions matter. we shouldn't waste energy discussing their worthless words.

They can’t even get their own party to vote unanimously for this bill. Why do they expect the other party to at all?

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 18 points 4 days ago

AOC or Jasmine Crocket should go "Cool, if you are not in charge then I nominate myself for Speaker of the House".

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago

MAGA believes whatever they're told most recently, just like Trump. My Nextdoor app feed proves this to me.

[–] joyjoy@lemmy.zip 17 points 4 days ago

Translation: If they voted yes on this bill they hate, the government would reopen. They have all the power here.

[–] Novamdomum@fedia.io 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

If you look closely you can see the sweat.

[–] DirtPuddleMisfortune@feddit.org 13 points 4 days ago

"The government is reopened. Everything we democrats want is from now on in effect. If the republicans have a problem with that, they can shut down the government. You're welcome!"

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Adelita Grijalva - learn that name, people.

If any Democrat is controlling government, it's Adelita Grijalva. Now hand the keys, Mike.
