Explanation: The Flemish urban militias, made of common-born folk (though not peasants - artisans and skilled laborers), had a peculiar melee weapon they were fond of, called the 'Goedendag', meaning 'Good day'. Presumably, the French knights who faced them found their own day a little less fantastic by its introduction.
But the goedendag wasn't a plank, it was a pole.
