"Pete #Hegseth’s big, urgent military summit will just be a “pep rally” for what he calls the “warrior ethos.” "

“It’s about getting the horses into the stable and whipping them into shape,” an anonymous defense official told the outlet. “And the guys with the stars on their shoulders make for a better audience from an optics standpoint. This is a showcase for Hegseth to tell them: Get on board, or potentially have your career shortened.”

Ah, so this was all just to threaten them.

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 43 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Takes balls to gather the actually toughest people in the world and then try to intimidate them.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 26 points 3 days ago (1 children)

US military leadership are not remotely the toughest people in the world.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Not now that they're exempting top brass from training due to "technical knowledge"

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Or absolute fucking idiocy.

[–] ultranaut@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago

He is trying to get as many of them to resign as he can by jerking their chain.

The meeting announcement was sudden and ambiguous, and will pull these senior military leaders away from their previous assignments.

Hegesth’s “warrior ethos” hinges on his belief that the military is too woke. He is expected to use Tuesday’s meeting to go over new fitness and grooming standards for officers.

I can totally see that as the actual reason. It’s stupid, it’s incompetent, it’s fascist, and it’s totally self-serving for (in this case) Drinky Pete.

Oh, it's definitely the case. There's new beard rules (i.e., no more beards), and one of my employees is thinking about letting his reserve contract end over it because he can't get a medical exemption (he has a skin condition). He was planning to stay on until pension retirement, until this idiot took over.

It's probably a good time for those generals and admirals to discuss how they will overthrow the soon to be despot.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I can’t believe this thought hasn’t occurred to them.

“You had enough of this shit too?”

This is the peak "this could have been an email" meeting

[–] Wytch@lemmy.zip 48 points 3 days ago

Hegseth plans to have his speech recorded and later released.

Oh that should be fuckin hilarious

[–] BigPotato@lemmy.world 45 points 2 days ago

I should clarify - the U.S. Army Warrior Ethos is

I will always place the mission first.

I will never accept defeat.

I will never quit.

I will never leave a fallen comrade.

So... Flying everyone back to D.C. for a pep rally is quite literally making them not place the mission first and violating the first line...

So, yeah, he's planning a coup.

The Trump regime has to be the saddest bunch of insecure fucking losers that have ever had the reigns of power.

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Fascists are always insecure fucking losers.

Also the meanest and most vindictive and malicious.

The most greedy. Not the most capable though.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Every member of the armed forces needs to remember that they are required NOT to follow ILLEGAL orders, and they've sworn to uphold and defend THE CONSTITUTION from ALL ENEMIES, foreign and DOMESTIC

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago

They’re a bunch of servile meatheads who will do fuck all. The BEST of them were all purged by Trump and even they are just sitting by quiet and complicit.

[–] happydoors@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Public photo-op and rally. Privately? Loyalty test.

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Yeah kind of glossed over the part where he's going to threaten to shorten people's careers, which sounds a lot like firing?

[–] kat_angstrom@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

Unless that's just the shitty cover story

[–] blave@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago

I mean, it’s possible. But it’s also much more likely than this idiot has actually done this ridiculous thing for this preposterous reason.

Like… We all have this friend who, whenever they get into trouble, some might think they did it out of malice. But, you know the guy, and know right off the bat that he got into trouble because he did something stupid, not something intentionally malicious.

And how do you know this? Because they’ve done it before, and they’ll do it again.

[–] Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Sounds like a cover story to me

[–] hovercat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago

Have y'all ever listened to or seen anything about Hegseth? He's prattled on about this "warrior ethos" shit endlessly and was literally too stupid and incompetent for Fox fucking News. This is exactly the kind of stupid shit he'd pull.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

Is this like that asshat manager that always wants to hold some "team building" exercise, make everyone travel into the office or some central location, and then make it all about themselves?

[–] VampirePenguin@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't know any generals and I don't have much of an idea of what internal military politics are like. But I'd like to think that our top brass have a deep understanding of the history of how wars develop, see the writing on the wall and do a coup. They are literally the only force that can kill this cancer before it fully metastasizes.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

hence them getting rid of as many 4 stars as they can

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Isn't this not that dumb of a reason? Look at it this way. The summit is to make clear and solidify the new ideological direction of the entire military. I think it's pretty scary still.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don't believe them either

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Right. Like "pep rally for the warrior ethos" is pretty broad. Maybe the warrior ethos includes slaughtering those pesky transgenders

[–] Flamekebab@piefed.social 4 points 3 days ago

If they run, they're antifa. If they don't run, they're well-disciplined antifa.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 3 points 3 days ago

Pesky anyone who doesn't cower properly, military or civvie?

As someone with actual Norwegian roots I can't stand the Nazis' appropriation of imagery. Not that there is anything that I can stand about the Nazis.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

Yeah, any time I see someone with viking/Nordic symbols I have to play the game of "nerd or nazi" (nerd is a good thing in this instance). I usually assume Nazi, and that hurts.
