Explanation: "No Man's Land" was the term for the area between trenches in WW1, which was often targeted with artillery and littered with obstacles, unexploded ordnance, barbed wire, and carefully watched by enemy snipers and machineguns.
Naturally, the brave generals far from the front lines often felt it was unfitting that the common soldiery was reluctant to go 'over the top' and cross this area!
