Maybe I should've hopped the train way earlier, or maybe I'm just a whiny bitch, but I do NOT want to see pop-up ads on my paid service, especially for an even more expensive plan. Like dude, come on.

You can disable it somewhere in settings.

My Pass desktop app (which shown an offer for Proton Duo) does not have such option. But the frequency of the popups does not bother me significantly and it is sometimes useful. I am Unlimited user.

Would have posted a guide to get to the switch, but couldn't find it on the Android app (though I've never seen an ad popup there).

They do it once, a couple times a year, when they have a sale on.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Isn't that a promo for Proton itself?

[–] lemming741@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Also known as an advertisement

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Sure. An ad for a promo of a product by the firm whose product I'm using does not cross any lines for me and it doesn't even register as an ad in the colloquial sense in my mind. It's like when my local bike shop worker co-op asks me if I want some other product or service when I'm ordering. But I do ubderstand this isn't a universal view.

[–] fuzzzerd@programming.dev 4 points 1 day ago

For me it really depends show Intrusive and frequent it is shown. Being an ad for you a product I'm already using, in said product buys a little grace but there's still a line.

To me, it feels exactly like Windows advertising Edge, Bing, Cortana, copilot, and onedrive. Which is to say, scummy.

Isolating the market power context, yeah. But that's an important differrence. Is it the dominant player in the product line you're using that you more less have no choice but to use, or is it a small firm with next to no such power doing it. Is it a for-profit enterprise exercising their market power to maximize profits or is it a small non-profit trying to maintain sustaimability. I would react with curses to MS doing it, while being unbothered or even appreciative in the latter case. Assuming this isn't happening with such frequency as to cause annoyance.

I can highly recommend KeePassXC. Works on Windows, Linux, Android and on Mac and iPhone (Strongbox if you are on Apple, by same file works).

I used to sync with pcloud but I use syncthing now instead.

Or for those not interested in the fine grained control of keepassxc, bitwarden is free and has a great app and browser extensions

[–] uranibaba@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

Bitwarden is my goto choice if not keepass. My partner has it and is happy with it. I'm not constantly bothered with questions so I am also happy.

I got this today too. I would have jumped on it if my wife were interested in switching

[–] Substance_P@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

My wife was so I guess it worked, but honesty we all needed a VPN.

I use Tuta and love it. I miss my calendar talking with others' and I have to accept an extra refresh every time I want to read an email I received, but it lets me feel very smug, self righteous and secure.

If they offered a task/notes app I would be soooo happy.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fuck that. They don't even support pgp, so it's not really a replacement

[–] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

PGP is a layer on top of email, it depends on your client.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not with proton it doesn't. And that's the point. They do it for you, so you can't fuck it up

[–] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Proton did not reinvent the email protocol, they simply implemented PGP into the web client.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 2 points 1 day ago

Yes. Do you know of an alternative that does this?

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Forcing ads onto paying customers means it's now time to start migrating away from Proton. I also have an ad stuck on my email home page "End of summer sale" I've got a year left on my Unlimited account. No need for this crap.

First stop is upgrading Tuta and sign up with Addy. After that start changing accounts to Addy aliases.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago

You must be new here.

And here I was wondering when Duo the owl turned orange and grew a stem.

[–] cyborganism@piefed.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Do you have the free version? I have a paid subscription and I get very little ads. I only get announcement for new services in my email.

[–] cardfire@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Can't it be both? I am certainly a whiny bitch who fired platform vendors for serving me ads after I gave them money.

Bitwarden is great, or KeePass if you want truly offline storage.

Oh what a sick deal!
