Is this about the minimum A press speed runs?

[–] NorthWestWind@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

It's in some way related. This is the Tick Tock Clock (TTC) upwarp, a glitch that happened to a speedrunner (not ABC) where Mario got randomly teleported to a higher position. It was speculated that a bit flip happened due to cosmic ray, but it's more likely that it was caused by a hardware bug instead.

pannenkoek2012, famous for creating A Button Challenge (ABC) TASes, put up a $1000 bounty for anyone who can solve (consistently reproduce) the TTC upwarp, since an upwarp would be very helpful in gaining height without pressing the A button to jump. This upwarp never got solved, but he already found ways to beat TTC without any A presses and it was insane: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98EpPsaAF_k

Nah, this a moment where in a speed run someone got a bit flip and launched in the air. So it was literally random and not reproducible. And that was kinda sad because everyone wanted to learn that skip.

Yup, people theorized that it was from a cosmic ray, but it just as early could have been a hardware issue.

For context, cosmic ray bit flips are so rare that people whose entire careers put them in a position to catch one will likely never see it happen.

Y'know as someone who just couldn't afford shelling out for ECC RAM for my home server, and seeing all the "BuT wHaT iF" FUD online about bit flips...

...I REALLY appreciate this and it's lowered my ambient anxiety. :)

I'll still maintain a reasonable backup strategy, of course!
