The first amendment has never protected people from losing their jobs. If I go in one day and call my boss an incompetent, micromanaging asshole, I’ll get fired. I can’t just yell first amendment and keep my job.
Now if you call your representative and tell them they’re an incompetent, cowardly, fascist piece of shit, and then you get arrested, well now that would be a first amendment issue.

Unfortunately, most places in the US are at will employment, so it doesn't really matter what was said, if an employer wants you gone, even if it's due to outside pressures, they just have to say the word.
^ this - don’t sign at will contracts - push back (easier said when self employed)

It is weird how "free speech" is there for the right, but not anyone else.
All non-fascists need to start punishing the fascists for their speech. We've been way too tolerant for way too long. Shout them down, ostracise, refuse service, etc.
I remember when Huckabee being denied a cheese plate or Rand Paul being followed by people asking him questions had them quaking in their boots and pretending they were being terrorized for such behaviors.
Imagine if it was a coordinated effort to just merely ostracize and verbally challenge these people? God, they'd be in a fetal position. They really do believe they are their god's gift to humanity and NO ONE has any right to question them or push back even if ever so mildly.

As an adjunct myself, wanted to see how widespread it is but this doesn't seem to be. We're usually first on the chopping block, but a dozen firings isn't very many overall when there's thousands of people teaching. I think similar happened when we celebrated Luigi, too, and both are pretty popular opinions with students.
Still, always be mindful of your online footprint and what you say in front of students in particular. You're dealing with whole groups, so even if it's a 90% popular opinion, you'll get one asshole who may report you anyway. That includes religion, too, which is especially tricky when you're an atheist teaching psychology and have to address shit regarding free will, evolution and why we have guilt and such.
But hey, we're pretty fucking free to say what we want on Lemmy, it's so obscure that I'm not even sure the government watches it.
when there's a school shooting, it's always a tragedy. when someone dies in a school shooting, it traumatizes people ∴ it's a tragedy. when the target of a school shooting is not a child, we get to breathe a sigh of relief. gonna be honest.
There was a school shooting the same day and we celebrate some podcaster rather than the children that are gone. It's fucking stupid.
