The US Undersecretary of State, Christopher Landau, says "appropriate action" will be taken against "foreigners who glorify violence".

In a post on X, Landau says he has been "disgusted" to see comments on social media "praising, rationalising or making light" of the killing of Charlie Kirk and those who "glorify violence and hatred" are "not welcome visitors" to the country.

He says he has directed consular officials to "undertake appropriate action" and tells his followers "to bring such comments by foreigners to my attention so that the State Department can protect the American people".

In a response to a tweet, Landau then says he will direct consular officials to monitor the comments to his post.

Posted in World News because it seems to imply the US is going to be asserting of some kind of universal jurisdiction against ...internet trolling?

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Seems to be what the text says... and let's not forget the US president is not afraid of economical or military action.

My best guess is that the text is a misrepresentation, because Trump's speech was completely focused on exterminating people inside the US borders. But without that context, yes, looks like it's about every other country.

That's one perspective. On Lemmy alone I've seen various posts naming the specific individuals for assassination, citing specifics about how to do it, and inciting violence within those threads towards people of opposing political views. I don't think it's unreasonable to take these threats seriously.

I'm American, and I will continue to shit talk and joke about Kirk and any fascist who meets the same fate. Fuck your feelings to the fuck your feelings crowd.

US citizen here

That was such a glorious shot and it's glorious he is dead! We need more fascists to be kirked.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Kirked (adverb) - to die ironically to your beliefs after being a terrible human being.

Charlie got Kirked yesterday after spreading hate.

Fuck your free speech in particular.

[–] eclipse@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago

Doesn't the US have a constitutional amendment for this (maybe even the first one)?

I'd think the "originalists" would be all for this.

Who’s a fragile little tiny fascist? It’s you? It’s you!

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

Take him at his word. Flood him with MAGA tweets from after the MN assassination.

Action to be taken against 'foreigners who glorify violence' - [US] undersecretary of state

So MAGA will be held accountable, right?

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

don't be silly, you know they only mean "anybody we don't like"

Does he think people even want to go to the US?

Even before Trump, the US was a shithole, but now it's a fascist Nazi shithole I have no interest in ever visiting again. Everybody I know is avoiding the US. It's a dead country until its citizens can step-up and take the country back from the criminals in power via force, as violent as needed.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

I've already decided not to go, but after this kind of thing.. I'm definitely not

Truly a bastion of free speech

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Kirk didn't deserve to be shot. In a just world, he would have been tried and hanged for incitement to genocide, just like we did to men like him at Nuremberg.

[–] puppinstuff@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 days ago

Thanks but I didn’t need a 17th reason why I’ll never set foot in the US.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

Dude, the vice president was just glorifying violence the other week after they bombed 11 Venezuelans

Hahahahaha yeah you cry baby fuck, hang a big "no internet meanies" sign at the airports as well 😂😂

Hey Landau! Go fuck yourself! I'm not visiting your fascist dystopia anyway! I'll gladly visit once you're all dead!

I'm posting stuff now that it's banned for foreigners. I was keeping the least sympathetic thoughts quiet, but not anymore. Gonna celebrate 9/10 every year too, let's get a national holiday going.

Herr Landau told his subjects that any laughing at their demise will be punished by the highest Kriegsverbrechen law Adolf Trump can enforce.
