Imagine being part of a society so backward and morally warped that it would inflict pain on two humans for showing affection to each other. Oh wait my society is like that too.

Yes - much better for the populace to be seeing beatings than... ew ...LOVE?!?

WTF? Is the country run by incels?

EDIT: oh, I see - homophobic incels.

[–] wuffah@lemmy.world 53 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Worse, religious fundamentalists.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

the manosphere takes many forms, but the basic shape is always the same

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Genocidal homophobic incel western puppets currently imperializing their neighbors, and were the prototype for America's anticommunist tactics post-1965.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 6 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Right. It's the West's fault. Probably converted Christians are secretly in charge there. Certainly no blame due for Arabia.

Yes, it was the US who worked to isolate the democratically elected leftist government, while supplying arms, intelligence, and diplomatic support to the coup who overthrew the leftist government then murdered anyone insufficiently religious, rightwing, and conservative.

If the book on how this incident was a template for future US policy was too much reading, here's a wikipedia article.

Arabia hasn't been closely involved for a long time. Actually, I don't know if it ever was or the someone like the Mughals were an intermediary, off the top of my head. It's far away from the Middle East.

Religious conservatives gonna religious conservative. If you go back to ancient history sometimes they were fine with homosexuality, or even expected some amount, but that died out along the way. Because of the European empires, but only because they were more successful, so I wouldn't blame Europe either.

[–] Horsey@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

this occurred in Aceh which is a gigantic island, but it's known as the "crazy muslim conservative island". They're locally governed and don't represent Indonesia as a whole.

[–] CanadaPlus@futurology.today 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The really successful religions and eventually empires just happened to be homophobic, so anyone conservative globally is likely to be homophobic.

It's actually a pretty LGBT friendly region anyway, it's legal in most of Indonesia, even, but they border Malaysia where gay stuff gets hard prison time.

Edit: As in, SE Asia is a relatively gay-friendly region, for whatever reason. It's not because social conservatism is out of style.

Indonesia itself is meh. Better than Malaysia, worse than Thailand. And the Muslim part will cane you for it, per the article.

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

LOL - you are so fucking wrong it's not even funny.

[–] CanadaPlus@futurology.today 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Do I dare ask about which part?

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Indonesia being in any way LGBT friendly is quite incorrect. No, there is no national law outlawing LGBTQ, however, there is a lot of discrimination, prejudice, hate crimes, etc. Yeah, there are some waria there, in some areas, but in general, it's not a place you would want to be LGBTQ. Source: Lived there for years, have family there.

To clarify, I meant SE Asia as the region, and I was mentally comparing against Africa or the rest of Asia. It's not the West, but Thailand and Singapore have legal gay marriage now.

[–] Horsey@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I can’t find anything about Singapore gay marriage being legal yet.

[–] CanadaPlus@futurology.today 2 points 1 day ago

Hmm. Yup, looks like I'm remembering changes to make it possible to authorise gay marriages, and laws passed around the same time against anti-gay hate. Pretty close but not exactly the same.

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Ah, thanks for the clarification, I agree with you on that point!

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 4 points 2 days ago

I mean thats genuinely the least fucked up thing the Indonesian state is doing, look up west papua.

[–] Redex68@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago (2 children)

[–] marsza@lemmy.cafe 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Can you buy those cans in Canada?

Barbarians.

[–] selkiesidhe@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 days ago

How DARE you be in love and show your happiness towards another person that loves you too! That's a TERRIBLE thing, didn't you know???

😠

[–] BotsRuinedEverything@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Don't give trump any ideas.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

It's already in motion, we may not have public caning for a few more years but we will have a whole new ripe population segment to fill our for-profit prison industry!

After that, they will go after interracial marriages under the guise of "stopping foreign terrorists from becoming citizens through marriage" and require all marriage licenses to specify the races of the couple for a registered database. And at this point, I will be yelling at people on forums and social media saying "Don't you see what they're doing??" and will be called "reactionary" and "fearmongering" kind of like when I said they were going to end legal abortion and start rounding up non-whites for concentration camps and that they will deploy the military to the cities of political opponents.

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Isn’t it already on the chopping block as per p25?

[–] foobaz@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Recently watched https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Act_of_Killing so no longer suprised by anything happening in Indonesia. 💀

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 2 points 1 day ago

The Author's surname is Oppenheimer. Just found that mildly interesting.

[–] HowAbt2day@futurology.today 5 points 2 days ago

A bit kinky to be caned for showing some love. Seriously though, any religious fundamentalist of any flavor is what makes humans look bad.

[–] ptolemai@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

They spent about on hour on the tower of power

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

The moral here is not to do public bathroom hookups in Indonesia.

[–] Horsey@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

this happens so often in Aceh that it's not even noteworthy at this point
