In a battle between two Californians considering Democratic runs for president in 2028, Gov. Gavin Newsom holds a slight edge over former Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a new poll.

The poll, conducted by Politico and The Citrin Center public opinion firm, found Newsom is the top choice of 25% of California's Democratic voters in the 2028 Democratic primary, leading all prospective candidates including Harris, the 2024 Democratic nominee, who is supported by 19% of the state's Democrats.

The two high-profile Californians are followed in the poll by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (13%), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (10%), Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (4%) and New Jersey U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (4%).

An Ocasio-Cortez / Walz ticket would be a dream come true. I believe Newsom is too much of a neoliberal and opportunist to actually begin to revert the US into a progressive state, and would ultimately cause someone like DeSantis to be elected afterwards.

Waltz/AOC would have a much better chance of success since America is still pretty sexist.

Dems should prove thsy by actually allowing a decent woman being the candidate

I am well aware. But my dream is AOC / Walz for 2 terms, then Walz and his VP pick

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

"Okay, we've had a 40 year old president now. Time to switch back to someone pushing 70."

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Also Walz will be in his 70s in 2036, AOC will be pushing 50. I'd much rather Walz 2028-2036 and then run AOC 2036-2044.

Walz/AOC would also work

I just vomited a lot a bit...

Edit: honestly I've been having this reaction a lot when hearing about neo liberals and fascists. The first part of your comment is my dream and the last part is feeling like the nightmare reality.

I don’t want newsom to run

[–] TheMinister@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not Kamala. Democrats just refuse to learn fucking anything don’t they

[–] Aquaphobi@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 day ago

I also don’t want Kamala to run either

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 30 points 2 days ago

Fuuuuck the DNC. I really hope that people actually vote in the primaries, if they actually happen, and we don't end up with another fucking corporate fellating Dem on the ticket for the general election. Then again, I don't want to hear about the goddamn next presidential election when the mid-terms are next in line.

[–] HakFoo@lemmy.sdf.org 24 points 2 days ago

I think we should look to outside talent. The lettuce that outlasted Liz Truss is available and probably more personable despite several years of decomposition.

[–] infinitevalence@discuss.online 19 points 2 days ago (28 children)

Newsom can top all the Democrats he wants, i am still not going to support him.

He can bottom them for all I care

[–] nymnympseudonym@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

His ability to match Trumpian trolling style needs to be picked up by someone new, or else we should really get behind this guy at least he is not literally a child raping Russian asset sent to destroy America JFC it's hard to be picky here

Democrats is somehow always able to find worse candidates than the last one...

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I like what he's doing right now. Mocking drumpf using his own stupid style of tweets is absolutely perfect and really seems to get under the pedo/rapist's skin.

But I am not sure about him running for the presidency. I mean yes he's better that the orange cancer... But can't we do better? We need better!

[–] Pulptastic@midwest.social 5 points 1 day ago

It’s an obvious ploy to gain cultural following leading up to his run. He hired a PR team and this is the result.

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 4 points 21 hours ago

Just to refresh memories, back in 2020 Democratic primary voters decided that picking a candidate exclusively on their perceived ability to fight Trump was more important than one who would be the best President. That didn't end up working so well in the long run.

If the Democrats don't elect a transformative President that will twist arms in Congress and put the people ahead of the oligarchs, then get used to the idea of President Vance in 2032.

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Lol at all this cute discussion like there's going to be a 2028 election...

At the current rate things are going it's unlikely we'll have 2026 mid-terms.

[–] marsza@lemmy.cafe 2 points 2 days ago

The midterms will happen but it’s gonna be all gerrymandered. 2028, hah yeah… not counting on that

[–] TootSweet@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (8 children)

I mean... that's a pretty low bar, though, right? Kamala just set the world record for fastest time from hype to revulsion any politician has ever achieved and pulled her entire party along into the grave she dug herself.

Fuck you, Gavin. Stay home. We don't need you effing this up.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 9 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Other than AOC, that list might as well be Republicans.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I'd probably separate out Tim Walz on that list as well, even if he's still not quite AOC.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 19 hours ago

Yeah, I'm relatively cool with him. I like Minnesota politicians in general.

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

Nobody sensible wants Harris. She was shit before, no way she'll get better. Is she trying to throw the next election too?

FFS the centrists are failures.

Can we do something like this for whoever ends up being the nominee? At this point I just want MAGAts to suffer and have their own shit shoved down their throats.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Can we do something like this for whoever ends up being the nominee?

That... does exactly nothing to solve the problems that led to the rise of MAGA. I mean hell, this is what allowed Trump to come to power in the first place. I get the appeal of "anything has to be better than this," but kicking the can down the road will hurt more than it will help. Think of it this way: What will happen under Newsom that would result in fascism not coming back stronger than ever and why hasn't that happened already?

Kamala is just looking for easy W's, when she actually had to do work she decided to back out of "toxic" politics....

Harris better not even try. Even less people would vote for a "loser". No matter who was to blame for her crash & burn.
