U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agrees with him that letting voters send in ballots by mail puts honest elections at risk.

"Vladimir Putin, smart guy, said you can't have an honest election with mail-in voting," Trump told Fox News Channel's "Hannity" after a nearly three-hour meeting between the leaders in Alaska. "He said there's not a country in the world that uses it now."

I thought they were there to discuss the Ukraine War? How did they get to mail in ballots?

Also, why the fuck would the US care what Putin thinks of how the US elections are run?

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 61 points 1 week ago (19 children)

Have you watched even two minutes of Trump trying to speak on any topic?

"He said there's not a country in the world that uses it now."

Sweden does, and probably other EU contries aswell.

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 73 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Canada does, and all we have to do is request a ballot be mailed to us (in or out of country).

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 21 points 1 week ago (6 children)

Some US states do this as well. Here in Colorado they mail you your ballot a few weeks before election day as the default. You are able to mail it back, but most people drop them off at secure boxes around town on their own time. You can still vote in person but its way more of a pain in the ass to do, idk why anyone would. Mailed ballots are far better

[–] Tower@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I can't ever imagine going back to filling out a ballot at the polling location. It's so much easier to do at home, when you can take time to actually research all eleventy-billion candidates for federal and state and county and city, then props and measures and....

In Switzerland about 90% of people submit their votes by mail.

[–] Weslee@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

Same for uk

[–] ideonek@piefed.social 26 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Poland have it. After you regiester, the national mailmen will come to your house on electiin day, but you vote in the sealed envelope and hand-deliver it to the balot box... Becouse, you know, disabled people exist. They have the right to vote. Any system that doesnt create the real opportunity to vote for people that have the right to vote is not democratic.

We all are going to be disabled at some point.

[–] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 22 points 1 week ago

[–] Sunlightl@fedia.io 20 points 1 week ago

Just to provide some non-sarcastic comments mail-in voting is a source of liberty and democracy for the citizens of the United States. It is a stalwart safeguard against being bullied and harassed at the polls.

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 28 points 1 week ago

Don’t you feel better when you’re protected by ICE at the polls and they make sure you’re not accidentally voting while looking un-American?

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 22 points 1 week ago

It also protects against intentionally underfunding polling locations in minority areas to suppress votes. No one should ever need to learn the phrase "if you're in line when the polls close, stay in line", because voting backups shouldn't exist in the first place.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 62 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Who gives an actual fuck about how Putin thinks the US ought to do things?

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Just Trump. It's always just Trump.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

Putin also thinks that it's okay to jail your opponents in an election. I bet Trump doesn't mind that idea either.

The president of the fucking United States taking democracy lessons from Russia...

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 56 points 1 week ago

This means we absolutely SHOULD have mail-in voting. Basically take anything putin and drump say and do the opposite and you'll be correct.

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 47 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Taking advice from Putin on "an honest election". Trump is openly looking to take away people's rights.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 44 points 1 week ago

Wow. Trump (Krasnov) pushing usa policy with advice (orders) from Putin! Holy shit!

[–] sad_detective_man@leminal.space 37 points 1 week ago (6 children)

"He said there's not a country in the world that uses it now."

Yes, blindly listen to what Putin says and ignore all the countries that do have working mail in voting.

Who knew they were discussing how to subvert democracy instead of what they were suposed to discuss. Putin is definitively Trumps handler.

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 36 points 1 week ago (1 children)

We don't give a fuck what Putin thinks. He's the example of what not to do.

Of course the fascists want everyone susceptible to voter intimidation. Yawn.

[–] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 32 points 1 week ago

Just taking some notes on democracy from an actual fascist dictator. No biggie.

[–] slingstone@lemmy.world 32 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Oh! Well, if Putler says it, I guess it's right, then.

[–] itisileclerk@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

Vladimir Putin said that voting in general is putting honest elections at risk.

[–] TuffNutzes@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago

My mommy let me visit my friend Vlad and were were talkin', ya know. And he said, you know what? I agree with you that mail-in voting is bad. And I said, yeah, right? See I know my friends agree with me. I'm going to go back and tell mommy what my friend Vlad said and say "See, mommy, even Vlad agrees!"
