Do it. Coward.
At this point dems need to play dirty and gerrymander as well. Though cali is a weird start, maybe some purple states would be better?

Do not split.
But what is happening in Hong Kong is they come up with a slogan, which is translated as Do Not Split, which is, we know that some people are willing to be confrontational with riot police.
And when they are, that’s going to cost the state in terms of not only resources, but it’s going to cost the state in terms of political capital and support. And we know that there are some people who are not willing to do that. And we are going to abide by the protocol of Do Not Split, which means that we’re not going to criticize them openly, and they’re not going to criticize us openly.
If we’re the pacifists, we’re not going to have them criticize us for being sort of like, I don’t know, limpid or flaccid or not courageous or whatever. And we’re not going to criticize them for being more confrontational. And the thing is that the support is also tacit.
Wow...this was really enlightening. I really like this approach because I agree: I don't know what will work. We need to make room for people to resist in a way that is comfortable for them. I may be more "radical" than some.
We'll have to see what works but in the mean time, I will do my best not to split. It will be hard not to critique but I see the need to not do that.
Diversity of tactics is a motherfucker to fight against. We'd know, the right has been really good at it
I think it's fine to yell at the politicians to do something, as long as we're giving constructive criticism and telling them what we really want.
Yes, I agree for resistance, we have to allow everyone to do what they can and not criticize their ways. It's hard for me too, I'm much more of a pacifist. I also realize that a world full of defensive pacifists would be crushed by aggressors. It's going to take everyone to resist fascism.
Fascinating… need to think on this.
California could definitely do it, we have a lot of seats in Congress, more R’s than you might expect. The main obstacle is the nonpartisan redistricting commission, but there’s already a ballot measure proposed that will exempt the 2026 election from the nonpartisan commission, depending on what Texas does.
It’s basically a hedge: if Texas fucks with their districts, we’ll go around the CA commission and fuck with our districts. If Texas does nothing, we’ll do nothing and CA’s nonpartisan commission retains its power. I might be oversimplifying a bit, but I just filled out a survey asking if I’d support this (I definitely do).
‘If’ Texas does? Bruhhhhh……. But that makes sense. Also dems should take the kid gloves off…. The Guarding Old Pedophiles party isn’t playing
The trigger is the best way to do this; you're basically disenfrachising a minority, albeit misinformed group of voters. We shouldn't want that shit in CA unless it's absolutely needed.
You’re right :(
They need to work any conditional into a law and pass it ASAP. Don't wait to respond until after the drama pays out, because then they'll time a resolution at a point where CA cannot get the process complete in time, or the TX maps will be allowed while the CA map gets "temporarily" blocked in a court case.
He is doing it... it's being put to a vote as a trigger law, to take effect immediately if Texas does it. Most blue states have independent redistricting commissions by state constitutional amendment. The referendum is to provide cover for doing it. It's what every blue state should do, provided they can't pass a trigger law directly.
It's blue states and not purple states because Democrats need to control every lever of power in a state to pass a partisan law.
I sorta think I might be dumb. There was another person who posted a do not criticize things, and I still need to think on that longer, but yes, I’m glad he is tajing some sort of stand against this shit! Thanks!
There has to be a ballot approval of removal of anti-gerrymandering districting rules. Newsom has said that the legislation is prepared and that the legislature is prepared to call a special election for it.
That’s fair. And I would rather fair districts…like make a committee and all, third party. Buuuuuuuttttty….. shits goin wild
They should pass the legislation necessary to do this with a condition that it only comes into effect the moment any republican state changes their boundaries. Every democratic state should do similar.
This prevents the scenario where they try to sneak it in without time for reaction at the last possible second.
It also massively disincentivises making any changes whatsoever
Also maintains some level of moral high ground (which seems to be an issue for some people as the country is stolen from beneath them) as it is only triggered self defensively
Well, it certainly is a sternly worded letter.
Wait, he sent it to the guy that can't read unless there's pictures?
At least CC the upholstery botherer
The letter is political cover for the partisan referendum, nothing more. No one expects Trump to do the right thing for the country.
The big blue and purple states should already be doing this. The only reason we have GOP majorities in congress is because of GOP state level gerrymandering. Do not forget that the GOP is and has been representing a minority.
Gerrymander until the nationwide congressional delegation matches the actual party line votes of the population, if you want to be fair about it.
He should do that regardless.
Just fucking do it you fucking turd.
This is the equivalent of, "If [Insert hostile nation here] fires another missile into one of our cities, we could start firing back."
I'm pretty sure the party abandoned Cali at least a decade ago.
There are 9 Republican US congress critters in California.
