Athens Mayor Haris Doukas responded to Israeli Ambassador Noam Katz’s criticism of the city’s handling of antisemitic graffiti. In a post on X, Doukas denounced Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide and rejected Katz’s accusations, emphasizing Athens’ commitment to combating violence and racism.

“We reject lessons in democracy from those responsible for civilian deaths,” Doukas stated. “Athens, the capital of a democratic nation, respects its visitors and upholds free expression. Our municipal authority actively opposes violence and racism.”

Doukas further criticized the ambassador’s focus on graffiti amid the Gaza conflict. “It’s shocking that the ambassador fixates on graffiti, which is being removed, while an unprecedented genocide unfolds in Gaza,” he said. He also noted a 90% surge in Israeli citizens receiving Greek Golden Visas over the past year.
