Its really pathetic. You would think they would follow the lead if the other actual real artists and prove that it can be art like the ones that have come before and not just whine that they aren't accepted.

Absolutely 100% wrong. You're placing an order in the faint hope of the result being "just about" what you wanted. Demands for small changes usually result in tons of weird side effects. You're not in control, and daring to compare it to actual photo editing or photography is cocky at best.

I'd argue it depends a lot on exactly how the AI is used. Just putting in a text prompt and accepting the output with minimal or no edits doesn't seem much different from essentially commissioning the computer to make something for you, but I've also seen some people use some of the AI tools for modifying images (like the ones that "expand" them by generating stuff the AI thinks fits around the edge, or that let one add something into a selected area or fill an area in based on what's around it) a great many times over to shift an image towards a desired result in a way that at least from timelapse looked like it would require some time and familiarity with the tools. A bit like how asking someone to take a photo for you doesn't make you an artist, but selecting a bunch of photos you didn't take and using them to make a collage or something arguably might.

Honestly I suspect that once this whole AI bubble dies down, there will be a shift in generative AI from just trying to make it create art entirely on it's own towards finding ways for humans to make art out of whatever becomes of the tech, partly because artists are nothing if not creative, and partly because in addition to just knowing the muscle memory and physical mechanics of making art, an artist is also going to have a sense of what does and doesn't look good that develops as they learn, and can try to shape an idea to fit, while the machine might just give you whatever it calculates fits the prompt even if following the prompt won't look very good without some tweaking.

This argument is shit and doesn't understand what's involved with photoshop or photography. Ai is little more than a sufficiently advanced chatbot.

With Photoshop you're personally creating the end product in your vision. Sure there are tools to simplify some of the tasks involved but it takes knowledge and understanding and skill.

With photography, you are taking a still from the real world. It is difficult and requires knowledge abd understanding and skill. photography is, shutter timing, ISO speed, lighting, relative positioning, perspective, Depth of Field, etc.

Typing a prompt into gen AI takes nothing and what comes out is a program guessing what you want. Fuck you for not even bothering to argue for yourself.

Your obviously bad faith argument excludes the distinction between tool and automaton.

All the things you listed are tools. They are objects that assist humans with performing a process.

"Generative" ai is an automaton. A human gives it an instruction and it performs a process fully independent of human action.

Hiring someone to draw a picture and then signing your name on it doesn't make you an artist, and that's exactly what every ai """artist""" is doing.

Computers are tools in exactly the same way. A person isn't moving data from one memory location to another. That's automated by the processor.

You could say the same about a table saw: a human isn't separating sequences of molecules with their hands, it's automated by a machine.

AI is not different from the above tools.

My argument isn't "bad faith" just because you disagree with it; your lack of understanding is not sufficient to disprove the assertion. Come prepared, or don't come.

So you're telling me that you have a table saw that can stand up, walk to the wood pile, grab a plank, measure to size, line it up, and push it over the blade if you say "I need a two foot 2x4"? Because that is the level of automaton that we're talking about with ai. The human makes a request, the bot does all the work.

But nevermind, I just looked into your comment history and you obviously don't have the mental faculties for an intelligent conversation on this subject. Have a nice life, I'm out.

Idk if this will come out with the right meaning in english, but imo when somebody is using something like a LLM they are more like a manager in a factory/office than a film/music director.

I think it definitely depends on the level of involvement and the intent. Sure not everybody who just asks for something to be made for them is doing much directing. But someone who does a lot of refinement and curation of AI generated output needs to demonstrate the same kind of creativity and vision as an actual director.

I guess I'd say telling an artist to do something doesn't make you a director. But a director telling an AI to do the same kinds of things they'd tell an artist doesn't suddenly make them not a director.

i'm in this thread coming off as very anti-AI art but i think it absolutely can have a place in the creative process. even as part of the finished work.

Project managers aren't real artists because they have artists under them.

And that's what a LLM user is, at best, a manager. They are also thiefs (not that I think theft is always bad, just when your stealing from working class people) and scabs.
