There was a near mid-air collision at LAX today at around 11AM.

There is a severe shortage of ATC in the US. Remember when Reagan fired all the striking ATCs in the 1980s and replaced them with new ones? The new ones are all retiring and there are not enough replacements which means that the remaining ones are all overworked and exhausted.

Does this mean someone could theoretically fly a plane unimpeded to a location that could fix a ton of political problems in sonic the hedgehog?

[–] turtlesareneat@discuss.online 4 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

There has always been a theoretical fear of someone loading up a Cessna with TNT and low-flying that into the oval. When civilian GPS first came about, they had to fuzz certain locations to make this less attractive. So far no one has tried with small automated planes.

These airspaces are controlled by the Air Force tho who would probably notice and implement countermeasures.

Do you remember when a swarm of automated drones were released from a lorry outside a russian air field and destroyed or damaged 10s of Russian bombers? That was pretty freaking cool. Not really related to anything in this thread in particular, but every now and then I enjoy reminiscing.

That is a very cool story and I like it, even if it's got nothing to do with this at all, the things they can do now.

AI traffic control trying to kill us. But, the lawsuit is cheaper than employing people.

Hawker Hunter?! That's a British military jet from the 40s. Is there another kind? Am I taking crazy pills?

[–] cfi@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

Several Hawker Hunters, actually. I didn't know so many were even active

[–] graycube@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I had that happen in a 747 once. Your stomach just flips. Not something you expect on such large plane. The pilot said it was a "tea cast" maneuver to avoid a head on collision. He said the other plane was a half a mile ahead, which seemed like a long ways until I realized both planes were probably doing 600mph or something like that.

It's TCAS. The Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System is an airborne system that helps pilots avoid mid-air collisions. It works independently of ground-based equipment by monitoring nearby aircraft with transponders and issuing advisories to pilots.

It basically negotiates between two planes and gives them opposing directions automatically so the pilots don't "avoid" each other by going the same direction.

Two planes dancing in a doorway unable to pass each other.

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 4 points 23 hours ago

Which one gets to say "oohp"

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

TCAS, not "tea cast" (:

TCAS or the "Traffic Collision Avoidance System" is a system that monitors the local airspace around the aircraft, if it detects another aircraft's transponder it will automatically exchange data with the other aircrafts, data like GPS position, altitude, speed, direction and more.

Then compares data received with it's own, and determines the risk to the aircrafts involved, and if there is a risk of a mid air collision it will order the flight crew to take action and even cooperate with the other plane to order specific actions to both air crews.

One will be ordered to decend, the other to climb, and TCAS alerts are treated as a higher priority than even a controller.

Here you can read more about the systen:

When you are seated, have your seatbelt on.

Six minutes after take off and people didn't have their seatbelts on. They won't make that mistake again.

[–] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Seatbelt??? While hurtling through the sky 30,000 feet in the air at 500+ mph?? That's uncomfortable.

[–] real_squids@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 day ago

Two-point belt at that

[–] Carvex@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

My first thought too. Wear your seat belt unless you’re in the bathroom or walking to it. Planes do crazy shit unexpectedly, now these people are a foot shorter because their necks went inside their body.

In theory, takeoff should be one of the safest times on a plane since that is when everything should be the most cleared.

But yeah. Couple years back I was flying back over the Pacific when the pilot got on the intercom telling people to fasten up in less than professional language. Flight attendants were yelling at the people who insisted on staying standing up. Pilot gave a real quick "Everyone get seated now" and one of the flight attendants slammed her ass into the seat next to me. Turbulence was so bad it felt like we dropped a solid 10-20 feet instantly and some people definitely kissed the sky and lots of moaning and groaning.

I can't possibly imagine what a 475 foot dive would feel like. It wouldn't be THAT immediate since it was controlled but... holy shit.

So yeah. If you are seated, buckle your seatbelt.

[–] ironhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 9 points 18 hours ago

The most dangerous times for a plane, are when that plane is close to the ground but not on it stationary.

IE landing and takeoff.

[–] I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Takeoff/landing is by FAR the most dangerous time on a plane. Like, even "in theory" there are just SO MANY more factors that could go wrong compared to when its just cruising in the air.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Ya, this shits definitely made me change my mind on that lol

Who the hell is hawker hunter and why is he so tall?

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 hours ago

Hunter Biden's alter-ego. It's all documented on his laptop, he's actually got superpowers.
