I'm super happy with all your responses. Across different fedi channels I got 25 positive answers and even more expressions of support. That's more than I expected โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ In a separate post I wrote a roadmap and will appreciate your constructive feedback. There's also a logo I quickly doodled and I plan to use as a visual identifications for our project until someone with real talent provides something better.

Hi. I got the idea to make a smartphone application to scan bardodes in supermarkets, to quickly check if a product is related to the US. I know it's not very difficult to make an android app that scans barcodes, (I did a proto). You just need to connect it to an open database of EAN barcodes. I am a phD student. I have very little time. I'm just giving away the idea.

Good to hear! I am just collecting a list of interested people and will be in touch with you and others shortly. Enjoy the evening!

@tad_lispy Exciting! Is moving out of the cloud in scope as well?

[โ€“] tad_lispy@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thanks, but would you elaborate please? I'm not sure how to interpret your question. If by "moving out of the cloud" you mean migrating to on-premises or self hosted solutions, then sure, I don't see why not.

[โ€“] simondassow@masto.ai 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

@tad_lispy Indeed I'm thinking of moving things from the cloud to (self) hosted solutions, or maybe just data migration in general, not just from US clouds, but anything hosted on US servers - if that distinction makes any sense...

It does make sense. If you are thinking about it as a commercial service, then of course we can offer help. Currently I'm in the process of assembling the core team (see https://lemm.ee/post/58578768 for details). Once we are together, we will have to do market research and see for what kind of services people are willing to pay us. But we will almost certainly have people competent for such work.

If on the other hand you are thinking about your personal services, then I expect that within the co-op there will be plenty of mutual support and learning opportunities for that. But it's important to remember that we are starting a business, so the first focus is to generate income.

I'd love to help but don't think my expertise is there, I specialise in Quality Assurance in software development.

Great initiative, best of luck!

I don't know. To start a co-op business we will certainly need diverse skills. At this stage we are just talking, so please stay in the loop if you want to.

I don't have mastodon (and no real interest in using it), any way to stay in the loop?

I think masto servers get RSS feeds for free. You may be able to follow some users or tags like that

I'm an aspiring patent lawyer but not trained in IT (although I learned coding just enough to understand some principles). Should you need any help regarding intellectual property rights, feel free to ask me anything. I'll do my best to help, as I support your cause! However, I won't be of much help otherwise as I'm currently learning for exams and have to small kids at home.

Thanks for reaching out. Good luck with your exams!
