Thank you for reading it, and enjoying these!!!
Absolutely love these posts. Look forward to it each week! I'm really curious to watch SteamOS grow into something bigger for desktops someday.
While many of us would probably go to a more specific Linux Distro, having the option for the average user to move away from Windows (especially in a less intimidating or familiar fashion) is a big step forward.
What have you been playing?
Blue Prince! I've been trucking away with this for a while because it's very possible to play using the controller while holding a baby - no quick reflexes required! I've hit a bit of a wall with progress in it though and have reached a point where it feels more like luck than skill/puzzle-solving is needed to tackle my current objective.
I really wish I was better with puzzle games. Even the world's darling - Portal - is a bit beyond me. Despite having a brain that should enjoy puzzle games...they never catch on for me!
Congratulations on the baby, I hope you get a little more time to enjoy both holding and gaming soon enough :)
I feel like making that comment earlier broke my run of bad luck and I "completed" the game. (There's obviously a tonne of additional puzzles to work out, but I think I might take a break from this for now!)
What have you been playing?!
I'm playing through Celeste again. I only finished the main story when I played it before. I intend to finish chapter 8 and go through as much of the B/C sides as I can this time.
I've also been playing Stardew Valley and another game called vivid/stasis. I really like the story in vivid/stasis so far because it's Sci-Fi, one of my favorite genres. There are some things that I don't enjoy about the game, like the puzzles and the boss songs having health bars (the songs are just too difficult for the current me to beat with a health bar). Thankfully I can just skip the puzzles with a guide and the boss songs using the autoplay accessibility option.
Ahhhh my friend, who is a dev for Decky Loader, is obsessed with Celeste, and far-far-far better than I will ever be with it AND Vivid/Stasis... AA is that you?!
I've put in soooo much time on Stardew over the years that I think its one of those few games I just can't go back to...I shudder to think of just how much time :)
AA? If you mean your friend then I'm not them.
What I've learned playing rhythm games is that taking breaks is important. When I hit a wall, I just take a break from that game and come back to it later.
Thanks for doing these, this is some top quality content!
I wonder if Microsoft is making dev mode free because hackers got close to a working exploit in retail mode. There was one shared almost an year ago, but it required a specific app from the store that had been deleted since, but maybe it led to something behind the scenes.
@PerfectDark
The ZOTAC handheld looks really nice, but I'm so hanging out for the day when we get a really nice Strix Point-based handheld. That being said I'm still plenty happy with my Lenovo Legion Go.
Been way too busy at the moment to play much at all to be honest, but I've been having a bit of a tinker with Cyberpunk 2077 on Legion Go. Even though it supports FSR 3 out of the box, it seems to run better and prettier with Decky Framegen (which is a fantastic little project, btw).
Once you've sunk some time into Cyberpunk, you can really open it all up with the tons and tons of fun mods via Nexus!!! And when I say 'tons'...boy do I mean it!
Cyberpunk, just like The Witcher 3 holds a special place for me, even reading the title makes me stop and wonder maybe its time I played it just one more time...
Their DLC, Phantom Liberty is just drop-dead gorgeous to play though!
@PerfectDark
I just never got attached to CDPR games. They're fine (and 2077 even ran fantastic on launch for me, owing to having a 3090 at the time) but I never got anywhere near finishing any of them.
Yeah I'm currently playing cyberpunk for the first time and am loving it. Haven't played Witcher 3 either, though that's on my list. Had a twenty year break from gaming until I got a steam deck recently so have loads to catch up on!
What a pleasant surprise to find this on lemmy! Excellent write up as always.
What have you been playing
Jak and Daxter 2 via opengoal on Steam Deck. Such a clunky game, but it runs beautifully (except I had to stop right now because it crashed in the middle of the mission, but that’s one crash in several hours). This game feels like a sequence of levels that are just hard enough to be infuriating, but without feeling impossible. And the characters make it more interesting and easier to keep trying the same mission 20 times in a row.
That SteamOS compatible icon came to my Bazzite mini PC just before I brought it along with me for Combo Breaker. I suppose that leads into what I've been playing.
I competed in Guilty Gear Strive (0-2, sadly), Street Fighter 6 (2-2, which is better than I should have done given how little I practiced), and Skullgirls (a hard fought 3-2). Unless Street Fighter 6 gets a killer patch in the next few days with Elena's release, I think this is where I depart the Street Fighter train.
I also played some Devil May Cry 4 on the plane, and I'll likely do so again on the way back. I would have continued my save of Tales from the Borderlands, but I found out just before leaving that it doesn't have cloud saves. I'll continue with that and Kingdom Come: Deliverance back at my desktop at home.
What have you been playing
My usual games: Tetris Effect, Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 (openRCT2), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
But also a few other games: Selfloss, Trans Neurotica and GTA V.
Allthough my Steam Deck will be out of service for a few days, I found a "spicy pillow" in my deck, have to wait for a replacement battery to show up :(
Oh no!!!!
At least you knew the right thing to do, remove and replace that battery ASAP! Hope the replacement arrives quickly for you, now you know its getting done at least you can rest easy for awhile :)
These are great! Thank you
What have you been playing?!
Talos Principle 2. I bought it 5 months ago but only recently I've been able to actually play it.
The first game was a near 10/10 experience for me, so I came in with very high expectations, and... At the moment, I'm a bit disappointed.
The main drawback is how pointlessly big everything is. You spend minutes running from puzzle to puzzle, especially if you want to 100% the game, which requires a lot of wandering around to find hidden switches and light rods to solve the Sphynx's puzzles.
The environment is gorgeous, mind you, but it's just... too much. Which is funny, because an NPC I talked to yesterday lamented the exact same thing: '"bigger doesn't equal more beautiful". I agree, Jeremy.
That being said, it's still a fun game, and the story is interesting (although a lot more heavy-handed than the first game). There are also a lot of cats! And you can pet some of them! I also found a little fox running around. I couldn't pet it, but it was cute regardless.
But seriously, this game is soothing for the soul. There's just something in strolling around taking in the view with a beautiful soundtrack in the background that is just soooo relaxing. I use it as a way to cool my head after a day's work before going to bed.
I like seeing the up-n-coming consoles, and emulation becoming easier again :D Loved the Steam Delivery Girl mascot, she was very cool, and seeing what she would look like IRL is very interesting.
Thank you again for this great post!
I'm a little skeptical about Manjaro on the ZOTAC. I used it for quite some time on a PC but it was always just a matter of time until it broke due to version conflicts. Developers for AUR packagages assume that you're using the main Arch repo. So when you use the Manjaro repo, which is always a few weeks behind the official Arch one, the AUR updates break pretty regularly. Though you probably don't want to use the AUR on a handheld anyway.
Great post! I’ve been playing OSRS properly for the first time.
Ive been playing some VRising after a friend wanted to replay it.
Then i brought my brother into it (he plays singleplayer) and needed to hold back myself with suggestions because he was simply happy with slaying some skeletons in the tutorial area
What have you been playing!?
I've been tinkering with my Steam Deck almost since I got it a month ago. I mostly use it hooked up to the TV with a PS5 controller. I have a problem with sticking to one game and tend to jump around a lot between them, but here are ones I can remember playing in the last week or so for a decent amount of time:
Fantasy Life i: Not usually a fan of cozy games - I like more direction - so this one looked right up my ally with an actual plot to follow along. I got about 10 hours in until the game started blocking my progress by requiring I find buddies to advance the story. I'm not interested in having to look up where they can be found, so I dropped it. It was a fun 10 hours, though!
Broforce: Bought it for the 3rd time on Steam so I could access player-made levels, something not available on other platforms. I love this game! Wish they'd make a sequel or even an official expansion.
Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie: I recently decided to test out 360 emulation on the Deck via Xenia and remembered these 2 were on it with better framerates and camera control than the originals. Pretty funny to use a 360 emulator to play N64 games, but until the fanmade PC ports are available it's the best way to play them.
My next tinker project is seeing if I can get the DS models and texture mod for Mario 64 EX working. I have a thing where I prefer to play official upgrades to graphics when possible, which is why I'm use the 3DS textures for Ocarina of Time on the PC port.
How’s performance with Banjo Kazooie via Xenia on Steam Deck?
It’s been decompiled but I have yet to see an actual Windows / Linux port yet
100% perfect for both BK and BT, from what I've played. I also played through Beautiful Katamari and it seemed perfect as well aside from the katamari not showing up in the King's hand in the results screen. Oddly, this exact same issue happens in Katamari Forever via the RPCS3 emulator as well.
Unique in that they’re the first two have two trackpads on their handheld, like the Steam Deck does.
This sentence broke my brain
I get what you mean...kinda negates the 'unique' wording there, but the outspoken downside to so, so many handhelds which are released (and touted to be) in 'competition' with the Steam Deck tend to omit them. The LeGo got closest with the right-hand side one, which is still kinda small.
I know it's worded poorly, but I can (if I peer) still see what I'm trying to convey even with how its set out there!
"First two have two" is what made my brain trip and fall.
God damn it. The wrong 'to'.
Somehow I didn't even see it when you pointed it out!!! -__-
Yep, that's on me!
Haha it's a huge post with a lot of great info and I get what you were going for, I immediately disregarded the non steam decks for lacking dual touch pads after using desktop mode on deck. It's just funny to see it's unique then immediately say it's not
