There will be strings attached. Many, many strings. The best strings. Beautiful strings.

Take that dome and shove it.

It's pretty much impossible for it to not include at least a good part of Canada. Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montréal are all within the margin of error distance/routes to the US for incoming ballistic missiles.

This ain't some iron dome 10km range situation.

Yeah, it's probably more expensive to design a system that covers Seattle but doesn't cover Vancouver just because they're so close. Same thing for Toronto and Montreal. And in there you already have more than a third of the Canadian population.

Edmonton is out of the playground, though.

Plus, the US would massively benefit from having tracking stations outside of their own borders to see much further away. The most direct path from anywhere in Russia or China to the US mainland (sorry Alaska and Hawaii) always passes over Canada with the one exception being from Southern China to Oregon and California, and that route passes over Alaska.

Realistically, it's also going to have to include at least some of Mexico

What's he going to say about that?

Nah, we're okay.

[–] Daryl@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

Right. Trump expects Canada to pay for the bullets that America shoots at us.

Golden spray paint on NORAD

[–] Deadeyegai@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

By this logic it will surely also include Mexico, right? RIGHT??

Did someone say, "Star Wars"?

Donnie, if you want a big ass bowl of piss that’s okey, but please leave us who don’t out of it.

This sounds like the kind of thing they do then they go "now pay up", despite never asking for or consenting to this.

I do not trust the US government to nog immediately say as payment they need our mineral rights or something.

Frankly the only purpose this or NORAD really serve is allowing the US to run rampant, and I don't see the benefit to Canada, as we are not by and large under threat from anyone else.

Trump will be dead and in the ground, either by bullet or by hamburger, long before any of this ever reaches the functional stage anyway. I can virtually guarantee it.

Seems Carney is negotiating ...

Canada is in talks with the U.S. about President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence plan, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed Tuesday, shortly after Trump claimed Canada “has called us and they want to be a part of it.”

“To that end, the Prime Minister and his ministers are having wide-ranging and constructive discussions with their American counterparts. These discussions naturally include strengthening NORAD and related initiatives such as the Golden Dome.”

Sometimes when the little kid invites you to play tea time, you gotta hold the plastic teacup and say yum

I wonder, what would the consequences have been for Ukraine if Russia had first built an air defence system that extended across all of Ukraine's airspace? I'm sure nothing bad could have come from that for Ukraine... right?

[–] jaemo@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Since he's A) utterly transactional B) obsessed with the geometry of our borders and the beautiful lines...

It stands to reason that the way out of this for us is to just...buy Alaska. Then the lines work better for small handed piss artist whose milieu is "gold sharpie".

Maybe think of it as our version of "Hitler got in to art school instead". Might be enough of a shock to the beams underpinning reality to undo the jolt that knocked us off course back around that Harambe thing.
