"for-profit detention facility"

And there you have it, folks.

collapsed inline media

John Oliver took a good look at this topic on his Sunday episode, worth a watch.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago

Oh look! A direct capitalist to fascist pipeline. I'm sure Liberals will defend the billionaires about it.

[–] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@sh.itjust.works 44 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"We have abolished slavery!!!"

If you can say this in Magastan with a straight face, you are either dumb as a rock or a fascist slaver.

[–] Warehouse@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

The States never abolished slavery, just limited the scope of who can be slaves to people in jail.

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 87 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is as good as a signal as it gets. Do not visit the US. If anyone can be whisked away with no consequence, its not worth the risk. Might as well be travelling to North Korea.

[–] BedSharkPal@lemmy.ca 4 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

How is this the last straw? Being run by literal Nazis seems like a good line. Fucking over their allies, threatening sovereign nations with takeovers, black bagging their own citizens, like do people have no principals until they are directly affected?

PS Fuck the Australian government for bending the knee on tariffs. COWARDS.

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago

Bruh. People started boycotting US travel long before they targeted Canada directly. The simple fact is that now its a direct threat to an individual's personal safety. If you cant make a distinction between those things youre kinda fucked.

The agency noted it treats all travelers with integrity, respect and professionalism.

Uh huh

I remember the professionalism at the El Paso border crossing where, while in near freezing conditions, armed guards with barking dogs shoved a pregnant women while yelling "get the fuck back in line!" Because she had the audacity to walk out of the line to ask if she could please please wait inside because she couldn't stand anymore

Fuck US border patrol, all of them

I have horror story after horror story of dealing with them, in New York, atlanta, El paso, los angeles, the list goes on and on and on... If it's up to me I'll never again go to the US for whatever reason. I'm so done with the sick, sick, diseased country

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gestapo behavior is on purposes... It send s message

The base loves it.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

purposes

Hey there, Gollum! Nice to see you around here

[–] Pupscent@lemmy.ca 8 points 23 hours ago

My partner and I decided during his last term that we will never go back to the states again. I don't even want a flight I'm on to land there temporarily for any reason.

The disease that is the US has been affecting our country for far too long.

Dude I don’t understand why the ones in New York such assholes. Like is it too much to be treated like a normal human being. I’ve also caught hints of prejudice toward how they treated me and treated others with a foreign accent. It’s disgusting

[–] Perhapsjustsniffit@lemmy.ca 7 points 18 hours ago

Two words...police state

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 hours ago

GET IN THE FUCKING LIIIIIIIINEEEEEE!!!!!

The response i got, complete with tomato red face when i politely asked if it were possible for me to remain with my would-be wife in the airport lickup because we travelled through the US to Mexico, just passing by, and she (Mexican) didn't have a visa.

Gets assault rifle aimed at head by some military idiot when airport metal detector beeps because I forgot my belt

Yup. This was April 2002, but IDGAF, you insane fuckers

Get a case with multiple hard drives lifted up and purposely slammed into the desk when I mention the border officer if he van be careful because that's really fragile

Fuuuucckk new yooooork

I never visited New York, and will never want to, fuck that place.

[–] gonzo-rand19@moist.catsweat.com 53 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Alright, this is it, I'm fucking pissed. America is an enemy state now, full stop, no take-backsies. I can never look at that country the same ever again.

"We're revoking your work visa because you don't have a proper letterhead." Fuck this bullshit. Fascists.

[–] BedSharkPal@lemmy.ca 6 points 19 hours ago

Not sure why it took this long for some of you, but welcome aboard!

[–] misteloct@lemmy.world 38 points 1 day ago (3 children)

San Diego is as liberal as it gets here. We're toast...

I don't know how many times you need to hear ACAB but it's apparently at least one more

[–] jaaake@lemmy.world 35 points 1 day ago

As a San Diegan, I wish this were true. We’ve got 3 major military bases, the population to staff them, and the retired officers/enlisted folks that set down roots here when they were active. When I was a kid, I thought it was so cool that Top Gun was set here. Now, not so much.

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

Their border agents are Federal, and have orders to feed the private prison pipeline.

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Im a Canadian of Latino/native background. I ain’t going anywhere near the U.S for a long long time and likely never. I am literally at risk of being kidnapped by your government just for deciding to visit. Fuck that.

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My friend is of Thai ancestry - when she's entered the US they just assume she's Mexican. There was even a case in Texas of a South Indian man being harassed for "being Mexican"... your stance is incredibly reasonable.

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

They also attack native people with the same racist accusations, it's disguising, and it's been this way a long time. The number of people I've calmly explained to about not being a Mexican national or Mexica ancestry while also being entirely Mestizo, and Hispanic from Latin America while they continue to tell racial slurs is depressing.

[–] Perhapsjustsniffit@lemmy.ca 1 points 17 hours ago

I'm not going because fuck them.

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The extreme fascist BS appears to be at this Tijuana/San Diego crossing so far. German tourist story referred was detained for 29 days until her return flight to Germany because she had a tatoo pen/supplies on her that "proved" intent to work illegally.

Counting on Florida tourism to not get attacked by Gestapo is not worth the risk.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I mean yes that is normal. Not the 29 days but I sure looked like she was working why else would she bring her tattoo stuff? And yes giving a friend a tattoo is considered working.

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Her story was that she was tatooing people in Mexico, not US. I believe barter/favours are permitted by tourists.

You might also expect "welcoming tourism" alternative punishments of confiscating equipment, or putting them on next plane home, instead of "straight to jail"

When I saw what post 9/11 USA was about, I promised myself I'd never go there again.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Oh, do you have a link to the post?

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 3 points 7 hours ago

No, "post-9/11"

[–] Dimmer@leminal.space 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Political prisoners like China, or just incompetence?

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is on purpose... They are sending a message.

[–] Sixtyforce@sh.itjust.works 3 points 19 hours ago

I'm not so sure they're that well organized just yet, but it's certainly going to stop me visiting either way. Message received, I guess.
