It did feel like they were wrapping up a lot of loose ends before Doomsday comes in and flips the table.

These "also ran" characters wrap up loose ends from:

Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) - Ghost.
Black Widow (2021) - Yelena, Red Guardian, Val, Taskmaster.
Falcon and Winter Soldier (2021) - Val, John Walker.
Hawkeye (2021) - Yelena.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) - Val.

Note: this article has spoilers, but isn't full of spoilers. If you're on the fence and don't mind spoilers, you might find this review helpful. Although, having seen the film, I don't think it's the most accurate review.

Thunderbolts* spoilers

Though its story dabbles in reflections about grief, it’s mostly a straightforward action flick.

So I won't disagree that it's an action flick and it is action heavy, I don't think "dabbles" is the right word. Grief and mental health are a core part of the film. The bad guy is defeated by a group hug and the power of friendship.

Is it the best execution? Maybe not, but it's done well and it's a new idea to explore within the MCU.
