Renner was hospitalized for blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries on Jan. 1, 2023, after his Sno-Cat, a large snow plow that weighs at least 14,330 pounds, ran him over. The actor was trying to help his nephew out of the snow near his home in Lake Tahoe when the Sno-Cat crushed him. His injuries included eight ribs broken in 14 places, a broken right knee and ankle, a broken left leg tibia and ankle, a broken right clavicle and shoulder and more.

Damn, that's quite the list of injuries.

The fact he's alive is a miracle, the fact he looks like almost nothing happened in interviews, etc. is absolutely fascinating.

Jesus, if you've seen one of those in action you wouldn't guess getting run over by one to be survivable.

Maybe it focused more on Hailey Steinfeld?

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 22 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

That's the only rational excuse I can think of, but that wouldn't have delayed season 2, they could full move forward with just her.

That and I assume they realized the amount they were spending on MCU shows was unsustainable. I loved She-Hulk, but it cost $220 million, Hawkeye was $150 million, Secret Invasion was $225 million.

She Hulk and Secret Invasion also required way more visual effects than Hawkeye...

[–] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

It still cost almost 3/4 of those. And those cost way more than they should have.

For what? For her to suck again, be annoying af, and get me cheering for the bad guys again?

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

Damn dude. Did she dump you in school or something?

Maybe Season 2 involved him being in fewer episodes? 🤔 That's the only real reason I could think to lowball him like that.

Season 1 was 6 episodes and he was in all of them.

Season 2 - Maybe have him in #1 and #6 with Hailee Steinfeld carrying #2-5?

I mean, sure, 1/2 the pay, but 1/3rd the work?

[–] gmtom@lemmy.world 13 points 21 hours ago

And maybe he wouldn't be able to do as many action scenes/stunts because of his injuries?

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 11 points 21 hours ago

Or maybe season 1 slightly underperformed. Disney might want to make a cheaper season 2, but isn't willing to pay full price for it.

Don't have all the details myself but important to remember actors are paid for more than what they do on set. There is still plenty of prep work as well as promotional material and rights for using their image for advertising and merchandising. Even if his screen time was drastically reduced there probably was still plenty of demands for media appearances and other obligations in the contract that would consume as much if not more time and energy (which equally restricts or prevents the actor from seeking other competitive jobs while dedicated to one long term project.)

So while there may have been to grounds to reduce the offer of pay somewhat, cutting by over half while still largely expecting the same work role even when considering reduced screen time possibilities, it's entirely justified for the actor to refuse the role.

“This is not Marvel, mind you. This is like, just Disney, not even really Disney. It’s just the penny pinchers, the accountants. I told them to go fly a kite. I mean, just at the at the insult offer. So we didn’t see eye to eye on it,” Renner continued, adding that he’s not ruling out a return to “Hawkeye” in the future. “Sadly, I still love the character. I’d still love to do it, but I I had to defend myself. I didn’t ask for any more money, mind you. Just pay me what I made made the first season. So it’s all disheartening that that didn’t happen, but that’s fine. I’m happy to let that go, because my body’s probably thanking me, time and time again, that I’m not doing it right now. But we’ll see.”

Wow. Turning it down is one thing, airing it out for everyone to see is another. Idk how he thinks he sounds, but it is not good. As others pointed out it's probably half the work because he is not going to be the main focus. On top of that what are we even talking about here? It's still gotta be millions! I get your worth is your worth, but to everyone looking in, turning down a job that would set any normal person up for retirement for probably 6 months worth of work is also nuts.

Honestly, on top of all that, wouldn't you want to stay somewhat relevant? A look at his recent work, and it's just glass onion from 2022 and another follow-up movie this year and 1 episode of Echo.

Uh he was run over by a snowplow, that put a damper on some projects.

[–] kemsat@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

He’s already set for life. Once you’re there, you’re not gonna waste your time for chump change.

Holy shit this is bad

[–] palarith@aussie.zone 9 points 10 hours ago

I thought s1 was setup to hand over Hawkeye to Kate bishop in s2

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

"Hey! First I get 100 times the salary of x00z and now you're only giving me 50 times his salary? Fuck you."

Yeah I'm all for fairness but I will always have a hard time defending rich people.
