Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

Mind you:

  • She is still quite right-wing
  • She is resigning from Congress in the face of right-wing threats rather than mounting any kind of meaningful opposition

Why are mainstream news orgs trying to rehabilitate her image so badly?

It is a permission structure for MAGAs to recognize trump as one with the elites they love to hate. I think it's fine, for now to beat the immense cognitive dissonance of recognizing that you were completely wrong.

It's probably good overall. It was his cult of personality anyway, so them dethroning him will only make the party eat itself faster.

They aren't that I have seen, do you have examples? She was getting a lot of attention for how the Epstein saga played out in Congress, and now is the highest profile example of a MAGA true believer who is willing to talk publicly about being driven out of the cult. There's perhaps a tendency currently to focus on these recent events more than her history as a piece of shit, but I've yet to see any articles that ignore who and how she is.

[–] gustofwind@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, go read the author defending her in the comments section of the article in question that also does in fact try to position her as a character evolving toward respectability

To me it’s just a cheap ploy to capitalize on someone they view as a traitor to maga. It is another appeal to the center right

[–] ultranaut@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I read about a half dozen of the authors comments and I'm not seeing it? They seem to be polite and diplomatic but the closest thing to defending her is providing details about the "Jewish space lasers" incident.

Is she not a character making a play for respectability? I don't understand how reporters pointing that out is an issue, it is factually what is happening. I agree she isn't a respectable person and never will be, but it doesn't change what is currently going on with her.

I also don't understand how it is a cheap ploy for the news media to cover her defection/excommunication. That seems inherently newsworthy to me, I think it would be weird if they didn't cover it and ignored the situation.

[–] gustofwind@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ignore what? Cover what situation? The ongoing crisis between MTG and maga/trump? That isn’t a real situation and it was covered on the spot because it was a tweet some time ago followed by MTG doing press runs.

What’s being covered are conjured media stories simply caring about her for no reason that conclude she is being rehabilitated in some manner.

This is manufactured propaganda to keep her in the spotlight and rehab her image in what I can only imagine is a stupid attempt to fuel anti trumpism

[–] ultranaut@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't think I'm following. Why do you think MTG is faking it? Who do you think is manufacturing anti-Trump propaganda?

[–] gustofwind@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

She’s a bare naked political opportunist who has been doing a continuous press tour about being betrayed by maga and having her life endangered by Trump.

She has dodged all questions about her complicity, no reporters have meaningfully pushed her on anything (though we may have different standards for what constitutes good journalism), and we see nyt using and concluding with mtg’s own premise of evolving toward respectability

They, nyt and cbs are egregious examples, are creating the very appearance of respectability she is probably not only paying to create but also serves as another avenue to drive negative attention toward maga and Trump
