I'm always comforted in knowing that I'm completely bracketed by major targets and won't die in the fire but instead by the fallout.
Probably not. Nuclear fallout loses 80% of its effectiveness after 24 hours.
If you can find a building to avoid the initial blast, stay inside for a day and then leave the area while wearing something to filter the air. Get rid of the clothes you wore and you have a very good chance of not getting sick or dying.
Sure buddy, just avoid eating or drinking anything for the next 200 years.
Yeah but there will be a ton of it around me. I'm about 20 miles from camp David, 20 miles from Raven Rock, 40 miles from dc, and 40 miles from ft meade. And Raven Rock and camp David will both be surface bursts and produce a shit ton of it.
I mean damn, at least you know you're gonna have a chance to become an atmospheric storytelling skeleton or blast shadow, but that's some bad damn luck.
It's safer the longer you stay put. So don't consider 24 hours safe when you can stay longer. If you can wait until rain, that's could help with the dust. There's also the fact that radiation seeps in trough the building itself. It's safest to have as much building above and around you as possible, so stay near the bottom or in a basement. When you see the white light, get to cover and stay away from windows. After the initial blast you have around 15 minutes before the fallout starts to come down.
