It's not good either. It's still run by a libertarian tech bro

So? Did he go off and finance Trump's elections? Or finance any other fascists for that matter? Does he sell your data or does he respect your privacy? Did him or the company do any of the things that Amazon, Google, Apple, Facebook, etc have done?

The answer is no.

The CEO made a dumb comment about one of Trump's picks for a role at one point. That's it. Big fucking whoop.

This is the problem with some of the folks out there. Some of y'all are asking someone or something to be absolutely 100% perfect and pure. You'd rather see something that has any potential of actually becoming something good and a real alternative and a competition to the big fascist eites out there die because of some small detail than pushing for its success despite it's few flaws. Just like the Americans with the last presidential elections, who decided to snub Kamala Harris because she wasn't elected in a democratic primary election, and instead let a blatantly fascsistic, opressive dictator fuck up their democracy to send the Democrats a message.

Until Proton becomes the next bad guy, I'm sticking with them because they're the only real alternative to what Google offers: an all in one package that's incredibly convenient.

Leftist purity test in full effect. Heaven forbid you make one misstep and you're forever unclean.

It's why the general population pays these people no mind because they're impossible to please.

Beyond that. He praised Trump/Republicans for standing up the little guys nowadays. fuck off.

Canceled my Proton paid account there and then.

Fucking hell, let it go. God damn. It's the ONLY time he said something stupid.

[–] SkabySkalywag@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Haha! Yep, his shareholders told him to shut the fuck up after the massive backlash.

But yeah, you're totally right, this was the one public opinion we know about on X. I'm sure ol'Andy has totally changed his opinions by now.

Heck, he might have even been visited by the ghosts of Edison, Ford, and Musk dear God I wish who all made him see the error of his ways come Christmas morning.

Look mate, you justify your purchases in whichever way we have all been doing using ANY multi cong. corporate controlled online services in this horrible era. I personally like to vote with my wallet and Mr.Yen's company can stuff it. Whether he ends up in Panama or Singapore, I'll still be telling people not to give Proton more money.

Name one more thing the CEO said or did, or that the company Proton said or did after that, that equals what any of the big GAFAM did.

Finance the elections of a fascist that's destroying democracy? Manipulating people's opinion through their control of near totality of today's most consimed media? Provide financing and tools to genociding nations? Sell your private information for profit? Provide all your personal information to governments without consent or without warrants for no reason? Underpay their employees? Literally hoarding all the world's fortune?

Go ahead.

I'm sure that one comment on social media had a HUUUGE impact on the world and probably helped elect a despot and enabled rogue terrorist nations to commit genocides.

I think what your are trying to say is primarily a whataboutism, and I'm going to guess that no good faith argument will make you want to dig deeper into the company's choices beyond the tweet -which you'll note he has not, to my knowledge, disavowed.

Sure the comment made the biggest splash, cause all these fuckers think their untouchable, but clearly Yan listens to his PR handlers so he's not going to damage the brand further. At some point you should look at the progressive business choices they've been making over the past few years and you'll see the same pattern used by the FAAMG -or BATX or FAANG or GAFAM- (aggressive acquisitions; more and more proprietary; overt political maneuvers), they are the definition of the enshitification that leads to anti consumer practices. We should be better than this.

So no, he didn't help elect a despot ( we did that on our own) and no Yan isn't funding terrorists (although I don't know his ties to Prism/Pegasus or Palantir? And pretty sure NSA is cool with him, given he only has beef with Switzerland). Regardless, all these shit headss are definitely not helping.

Its actually impressive that Proton went the Google full circle of 'do no evil' to removing that adage in less than five years.

Anyways, enjoy your Proton, bud, you won whatever argument you needed to make, I personally won't be convinced to fund Proton again without a leadership change -and probably not even then.

Be happy with your loved ones this holidays week, take care.
