There seems to be a weird aversion to anything that can be seen as politics in America. So I think most of the general public there are not aware of the political ongoings so if and when they vote they see a male and female running they just vote in the male irregardless of who they are.

Being "into" politics is seen as dorky because we have a bit of anti-intellectual problem.
