The word Jihad gets used like this a lot but it's not very accurate. It means "one who undertakes a meritorious struggle" which means everything from a monk who fights earthly desires to a crusader who fights enemies of the Quran.

In reference to the Butlerian Jihad for the uninitiated. It was referenced as an event in the 1965 Dune series and often attributed to Samuel Butler's 1863 essay "Darwin among the machines".

It's sort of become its own trope in scifi in the same ways a Dyson Sphere has,
