If this man honestly thinks that Trump is going to call him, then Canada has elected a fool for a PM.
Carney is not a stupid man. He knows that Spraytan will not call him.
In the days of the original round of tariffs; our then-PM acted with some degree of panic, flooding Washington and Florida with attempts to negotiate and make an agreement.
Carney is saying that has ended. We aren’t pursuing them, we aren’t playing this game anymore.
Until they respect our sovereignty we will refuse to deal with them. They rip up treaties? Fine. Block trade? Fine. We can respond with policy actions and don’t need to discuss it with them.
If the Americans want to talk about how to stop the trade war escalation or fucking anything else, they permanently cease the 51st state and invasion threats. Period.
You are not dealing with a fool.
What makes you think he thinks Trump is going to call him? He was just asked a question by the press.
If Trump never calls what does it matter? The last PM visited the palace in Florida and got mocked . Better to demand respect.
Oh good, your tag will be fool. Thanks for letting me know.
Nobody has elected anyone yet...
He's technically been elected. Just not by Canada as a whole.
Well, yeah ok, you got me there, I should have said, the election hasn't happened yet.
Appointed? I'm learning here, bear with me
PMs are always technically appointed, but are chosen based on a vote by Members of Parliament. But also we just kicked off a general election yesterday, so *shrug*.
Ah, ok. Kind of like England? Everyone else had better insult me to be on the safe side though.
It's basically the same system as England, it's based on it so yeah.
We elect a party to power, then that party appoints ministers from the elected people and normally the appointed Prime Minister is the leader of the winning party.
In this case, the last PM stepped down and in doing so, the House of Commons was "put on hold" while the party elected a new leader. The Governor of Canada then appointed that new leader as PM so he can assure the transition but he needed to trigger election before the House of Commons work resumed which was today.
So now we get a snap election of 36 days to appoint our new government but in the meantime, Marc Carney is the acting Prime Minister.
Is it just me, or do none of these 3 systems seem terribly representative of the people?
Oh it's not just you. Worst thing is we've got a first past the post system so far from proportional...
There's a lot of movement right now to bring proportional representation and it's been on and off an election promise that's never been kept but I think it's still very early and I'm not holding my breath that we're gonna get it this cycle....
It's diplomatic posturing. He gets to make a point about Canadian sovereignty and stress that the ball is still in Trump's court.
