I'm not overly elated.
Mamdani barely squeaked past Cuomo, who had to resign his last job because of sexual harassments, and Curtis Sliwa, who never actually had a job.
However, I will give Sliwa his due; he was one of the very, very few GOPs who called out Trump for pardoning George Santos.
How is winning by near 9 points against two opponents, one of which is ostensibly in your own party, "barely squeaked past".
It was decisive.
The count sits at 50% Mamdani, 41% Cuomo. In what universe is that "barely squeaked past"?
Most people don't politic.
Maybe that's the problem.
Maybe him saying "barely" is hyperbole, but a candidate as good as Mandami only being 9 points ahead of an openly corrupt rapist without official support from a party in New York of all places doesn't fill me with hope going forward.
He is a muslim democratic socialist that was unkown a year ago. You don't realize how much people fear islam taking control or socialism to take control. 8% lead is really impressive

Yeah that's kind of my point, some 40% of people in New York would still rather vote for the rapist because racism against Muslims and socialism fearmongering
It is more complex than that. The usa is a very individualistic country. People think mostly about themselves before others. So in many of the people who voted for Cuomo they said I would rather vote for a sex offender then a muslim who will implement sharia law and make their lives unlivable which is of course a rediculous thing to think about
I also though your point was that Mamdani winning by 8% is not imperessive
9 points is a ton. That's the kind of margin you get gerrymandering a district to hell. That means you won the election, and very probably the next one too
Red and blue states are the color they are by like a 5 point tilt in either direction
This was a fight between two Democratic candidates - this was the neo-liberal uniparty vs progressives
9 points is very, very meaningful in this context
In 2013, the winner got 73% of the vote
In 2017, 66%
In 2021, 67%.
50% isn't impressive.
In those other races, was there a third party candidate running against the Democrat after losing the Democratic primary?
Because obviously Cuomo split that vote this time.

That's the thing people have to comprehend.
A guy with a sex scandal got more votes than the last Mayor.
NY politics is fucking weird. This is an excellent result.
This is my take. Personally, I am happy Mamdani won.
And I can see that people want to celebrate.
But the cold facts are that, in the middle of a shut down, with the President in a state of obvious dementia, a Left candidate in the Bluest city in the nation barely squeaked past a known molester.
Here's why I still think of it as a win: It's not just the contest between two people, or their ideas, or their backgrounds. What you really have to look at is the contest between the propaganda and the budgets. The simple fact is that a lot of voters aren't that involved, they vote based on word of mouth or advertising, not by looking into the backgrounds of those they're voting for.
Cuomo outspent Mamdani 4 to 1. Billionaires and politicians went all out to attack Mamdani. Many painted apocalyptic pictures. If you look at those more distant contests, where someone won by a wider margin, I would bet that the advertising and endorsements weren't so lopsided either.
This isn't a win for Democrats or Mamdani, this is a win for word of mouth campaigning. This is a win for people being so sick of what's on offer that many ignored the dire warnings of billionaires and politicians. That's some good news I can get behind.
Dunno what you expected, but obviously there was going to be people who voted for him.
And the last mayor is Eric Adams. Not really a surprise that people didn't want to vote for him. Dude is literally a cop.
Look up some New York politics.
Giuliani literally let the cops riot and he won twice.
People didn't want to vote for Adams because he got arrested. He won the first time pretty handily.
Things have changed a lot since Giuliani won. That was like 25 years ago dude

Comparing those races to this one... Adams won last cycle with 753k votes. Cuomo lost with 854k. Mamdani has over a million votes. It's not even close to comparable.
So, the molester got more votes than the last Mayor?
Yes, by siphoning 200k from the republican. And the millions of dollars pumped into this election. And the name recognition of a Cuomo. Like, yeah it's not great, but it is objectively good. Even with that crazy vote total, it wasn't enough to stop the left populist. Which is all we need to show the national party. Left populism is popular and will continue making wins if you then deliver the goods (the step that corpo dems hate)
How many people running?

Celebrating a win =/= assuming the future is a cakewalk.

It was +9 points with 91% of the vote counted as of this post. You're having to make up numbers to argue your point.
Ignoring Sliwa? That's okay, pretty much everybody in the city did.
You take Mandani's number and subtract the second place winner. That's how it works.
