I always thought of them as internal organs as they were inside our skull and have a layer on top, followed by the eyelids which are moveable to make the internal organ visible.
Like if we could rip open our chest to show our heart on command as often as we want.
Here is a horror you might not have known about that your comment made me recall: The Cannulated Cow. Your chest idea seems plausible next to the holey cows and I don't like it one bit.
I've seen videos of those.
