Why do you need a screen on a fridge? It's literally just a cold box.
It could be really useful. I would love to have the weather and maybe a to do list on the fridge.
The problem is when companies reach there hand into the software. I want to have full control of a smart appliance.
Get a magnetic case for a tablet and stick it to the fridge. If it starts showing ads, you can take it off, put it through the wood chipper and the fridge will still work fine.
Why would I need to do that?
I think it is reasonable for me to expect that the high end fridge I bought and paid for will not turn against me. It is crazy what these companies get away with.
Even if the smart fridge doesn't become enshittified, the smart features will likely become obsolete long before the fridge its self is worn out. Just try using a phone or tablet that's 10-15 years old. It probably won't be able to open an https website, let alone install new apps.

Tech industry sucks for all the reasons you said. Your perspective is not unreasonable but capitalism and how it affects consumer products is unreasonable. Unfortunately we cant change that in any reasonable amount of time at the moment.
Sticking a tablet to your fridge to make it a smart fridge does provide you the functionality you want from a smart fridge without the ads for all the reasons @cmnybo@discuss.tchncs.de has mentioned above.
Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
You may want the tech industry to be better and provide the product you want to have but that doesn’t mean they have to. They haven’t shown interest in making that type of product and I don’t think that will change anytime soon.
You can be disappointed in that reality and continue your life without a smart fridge or accept Frankenfridge into your life and live out all your smart fridge fantasies. The choice is yours. Go wild… yolo!
Edit: The dealbreaker for me with the tablet stuck to a fridge would having to constantly charge it. Having a charging cord laced across my fridge would bother me to no end and so would removing the tablet every few days to charge it then stick it back on the fridge. Neither of those options work for me.
But I have never wanted a screen on my fridge so I am not bothered by my smartfridgeless existence. I don’t like too much technology around in my kitchen, or any room tbh, to begin with. I try to only buy appliances and kitchen stuff if it doesn’t have an “always on” light source like LEDs, digital clocks and such. That alone is next to impossible nowadays. How many kitchens have you been in recently that don’t have at least one always on light source on appliances or other gadgets?

You have one of those in your pocket at all times…. We really did this to ourselves.
Cupboard doors are too high; dishwashers are too low; ovens have too many windows; countertops are too horizontal; and the backsplash is too far away.
As far as surfaces where screens could go, a fridge is a pretty good contender. I don't have anywhere else in my kitchen I could put a dedicated screen. When I'm following a recipe, I just pop a tablet on the windowsill.
Your last sentence kind of defeats the entire rest of your comment. If it's just suppposed to be a built-in screen for following recipes in your kitchen, it's better to get a cheap tablet because you can also use it elsewhere for other things.

I don't see much use for a dedicated kitchen screen. Though for someone that does have a use case, the fridge is the only place I see it going other than a wall. More cost effective to use a tablet, we agree.

To follow a recipe on a fridge screen might also involve having an island to be able to face it while prepping, so even that scenario I have trouble seeing utility.
I think in the future, the screen will keep track of whats inside the fridge and be able to create shopping lists and maybe even order things.
But right now, I would never pay for it. Its like the wifi i have in my owen. Never connected it but I paid for it since it was included...
What's the intended functionality of an oven with wifi? Replacing an egg timer with push notifications?
I was wondering that too... Appearently it has a camera inside and you can connect to it using wifi so you dont have to walk 10 steps to look inside it.

That would be interesting if it were a thermal camera. Though as you point out, I wouldn't be spending extra money on such a feature.
Of you don't have a tv, you can just take off the fridge door, turn it sideways, and use it as one... very useful!
