MLK won because the alternative wasn't the status quo...

It was Malcolm.

Moderate approaches only work when it's the mutual compromise, not when it's the most you'll ask for.

It's why if neoliberals honestly cared about America, they'd be running in Republican primaries.

Imagine how much better wed be if Biden/Harris was as far right as America could go.

Leftists need to run in and win democratic primaries but they rarely do.

the problem is the two party system

[–] grue@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I mean, yes, but also there's no point in complaining about that because you have to be in charge of the system in order to change it.

[–] fort_burp@feddit.nl 1 points 3 weeks ago

I think it's the Democratic Party.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world -3 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

MAGA took over a party and leftists say the problem is the two party system.

[–] nothingcorporate@lemmy.today 12 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

We can have more than one problem. But the 2 party system makes it easier for the parties to suck because there's no real competition. You can have GOP or GOP-lite. Governments with more parties have measurably healthier democracies.

MAGA didn't like the GOP so they took them over but leftists just whine.

i'm allowed to identify a problem that makes it harder for the left to take over a party. neoliberals transformed the democratic party into what the republican party used to be starting way back in the 90s. the fascists took over the republicans in the 80s, and then started work on the democrats. when we try to shift the party left we get hit from multiple angles about how we're going about it wrong. do any of the following sound familiar?

  • bernie can't outcompete donld trump when it comes to campaign finance
  • don't vote for joe biden/kamala harris, (s)he's just blue maga
  • we need to be reaching out to undecided voters, leftists never turn out to vote anyway

like… even right now, i fundamentally agree with you we need to be taking over the party if there's to be any hope to survive. i want to have a discussion about the issues we face in a fundamentally hostile two party system that ratchets all discourse to the left, and the immediate response is to put words in my mouth that i've given up before i've even begun to fight.

i been at this fight for more than half my life, and we need to have clear motivations as we shift the discourse. once we have control of the democratic party, then what? just leave all the systems in place and wait for all this to go wrong again? no thank you. let's have a long term vision. let's take over the democratic party and then implement a real voting system. one where people's needs and desires actually matter instead of a constant fight to engage in fragile pro fascist systems.

I’m not putting words in your mouth, I’m pointing out a very obvious systemic problem.

The New Deal was passed in the USA in the 1930s not because it's exactly what the people asked for but because the American labor unions and Communist Party were strong, and they were pushing a much more egalitarian agenda. The New Deal was the compromise to keep Capitalism as the dominant form of labor relations. Now a days in America it seems like the Capitalists have to compromise with, at worst... Chuck Schumer.

Leftists love to parrot this but what reason is there to think this is true? Or is it just a meme?
