You guys complain that democrats don’t step up to trump, the moment one does, you tear him down. No wonder the American left is fucked, you guys are so toxic now that nobody is good enough to be an ally. There’s no such thing as a step forward anymore. You guys would rather have trump and play the victim. You’re all fucked and you deserve it
He isn't going to address anything that actually draws people to Trump. America needs radical change, which Newsom is not advocating for. Newsome is popular with rich donors to the DNC. He is NOT popular with people across the country. He's going to run the same campaign Clinton, Biden, and Harris all ran, will get absolutely pummeled, and then all of you will go right back to blaming leftists.
This isn't a purity test, newsome is just a massive piece of shit and he shouldn't be getting all the praise he's getting just for owning drumpf epic style. We're not toxic bc we don't want a president who rips up homeless camps, you're toxic bc you're already insisting that we fall in like and show him our unconditional support. You will lose the election if he's your candidate, and you will deserve it
I don’t necessarily disagree with your final point. As an American, I’m of the opinion that we are currently getting exactly what we asked for, damning as that fact might be about the American people. Regardless, though, the reason we complain about people like Newsom is because he is cut from the very same neoliberal (read: conservative anywhere other than the US) cloth that ratcheted us to this position in the first place. There’s a nonzero risk that with him as the rising star, he could be yet another uninspiring Democratic candidate who fails to galvanize the American people into actually showing up for once in our fucking lives, and I worry that even if we somehow pull ourselves out of this spiral, we may end up back here again in a decade or two
Make no mistake, I understand necessity perfectly well, and, presidentially, I would happily cling to Newsom like a drowning man at the moment if I had the chance, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be criticized as a figurehead of the left, because he’s not really representative of the left, nor is he necessarily even on the left in the first place. Still, there’s really no time to purity test right now, and purity testing something like this is, to me, absurd. I’d happily take a “turncoat” Republican (so long as it’s one of the less morally bankrupt of the lot, at least) as an ally in this fight, so why the hell not Newsom?
I get this. I have a senator who is fine enough but she is a war vet and always votes for security over liberty. IE patriot act and its extensions and such. I still vote for her in the general but am more than ready to vote against her in a primary. Unfortunately she often runs unopposed likely due to her popularity seeming to be unassailable.
I agree 100%
As a leftist I'm getting so sick of listening to leftists tear down any opposition to trump because it's not some mythical unicorn candidate. It's crabs in a bucket. It really is.
Trump has taken society back 10 steps, i think the left wants a candidate that will jump them forward 11. But that’s not gonna happen, any step away from trump is a good step right now, even if it’s just half a step forward
I am glad he is doing the actual sort of thing democrats should have been doing for the couple decades and realizing the political moment and utilizing political power to try and redistrict. But I'm not going to fawn over a different flavor of fascist because of his twitter clap backs and merch store.
Definitely don’t turn him into a personality or figure to love, politics needs to stop being that way. But he’s a step away from trump so take what you can get right now.
Im Canadian so we held our nose and voted for a guy we didn’t want but it was that or the fascist. We can at least hold the neoliberal’s feet to the fire, but the fascist doesn’t give a fuck
Just as bad in the UK. Corbyn can't get elected, Starmer can. Everyone hates Starmer because he isn't Corbyn. Not appreciating the fact he isn't Johnson/May/Lettuce.
Corbyn has no problem getting elected. His problem was that Labour refused to support him as party leader and threww him under the bus
Quite possibly oversimplifying things. I think a major factor was the media being against him and having no firm Brexit policy. Either way, like with Blair, you need the media on your side.
Bingo!
