Meaningless wars with Central/South American countries (because Middle Eastern wars are unpopular), sold as wars against drug cartels. War refugees to destabilize Mexico, followed by "peacekeeping" forces over the border.

They try that American's world standing will keep plummeting. I know the US is incredibly inward looking, but it would be hard to hide that reality from the population.
